Hello everyone...I just picked up my bike from a mechanic who has admitted that a mistake was made and the bike was ridden about 10 blocks with no oil in the primary. The bike actually had 5 more miles on it than when I dropped it off for a shorted stator....so I wonder about the 10 blocks statement.

Anyways...I am wondering what the effects are of doing this...either if the bike was ridden 10 blocks or 5 miles?

I added oil to the primary when I got it back, checked that there was oil in the motor (there was plenty), and started it up...seemed to be just fine and sounded as good as it has in the last 50,000 miles the bike has on it...2003 XB9R.

Appreciate any feedback...

The clutch would probably be the biggest concern since it is cooled by the oil. The gears should be fine unless they were stripped of lubricant or the bike was ridden really hard. If the extra 5 miles were done without oil, that might be a problem as things would have had time to get really hot. That said I've run a car completely out of transmission grease before, ran it hard for more than 20 miles, put in fresh synthetic and everything was good for about 5 more years until the body rotted away.

In the city of Chicago, 10 blocks is 2 miles.

Agree with Greg_e; and I would think that any decent, contemporary oil would have left enough of a film to protect the gears for a short duration.

I'm always worried of doing something like that myself, especially if I'm working on the bike over a couple of days. My habit is to take all the liquids that eventually need to go into the bike and put them on my lift before I start working - that way I have to move them out of the way to ride away without fluids. Figure if I still do it, I deserve what I get.

Hope it turns out to be no big deal for you.

Thanks for the input...I was thinking about the same as most...might be all right for a while. I got it put back together and she seems okay after 50 miles.

Like Ulynut says...time will tell...and so far so good.

I think I'd do another primary oil change almost immediately and look carefully to see what comes out. As long as you don't see a huge amount of chips/debris, I think you'll be OK.

There was an article by some publication that did a track day with an XB, and drained the oil out the bottom hole (crank case) and added the oil in the top hole (swingarm). Oops.

I forget how many laps they went at a race pace before it siezed up.

I think there was a story of somebody doing that at Deals Gap as well... you can see how far they got.

2 miles is enough that I would worry, but not enough that I would be surprised if it "turned out fine".
