1) Purchase Service Manual.
2) Follow directions in said manual.

Seriously, buy the manual - it is worth every cent.

IIRC, you elevate the front tire, and hook a spring gauge through the axle, then pull, measuring the resistance of the bearing via the amount of force necessary to move the forks. I don't remember what the 'good' value is, though.

Darthane is right -- front end off the floor, detatch the clutch cable at the lever(so it's stiffness doesn't alter the reading), turn the forks to the right stop, hook a tension gauge into the end of the axle on the right side, and position it so it's 90* to the fork (vertically). Use the gauge to pull the fork around. A reading of between 1 and 7 pounds is good.

I happened to be reading through the manual last night (don't remember what I was looking for, but I do remember pausing to look at this procedure for some reason)...
