Ok, I'm about to hit 1k. Should I take it in to HD dealer(cringe) for this? Will it effect my warranty if I don't take it to dealer?

It shouldn't, but you dealer is the ONLY one that can tell you if they'll hassle you about it...!

I've never had a problem...I ask this question where it should be asked..up front...to the actual dealer..!

I am speaking in general, and not about any specific H-D dealer:
They are not supposed to be able to deny you warranty for not using their service dept.
However, they may ask you to prove that the service was done, and with approved parts and fluids per owners manual specs (proper oil grade, API designation, etc).
Keep receipts and make your own service log of the work done, and have the factory service manual.
I even do this with my 4-wheel vehicles.
To deny your warranty, they are supposed to have to show that you did not follow proper procedures, were negligent, or used inferior parts.
I say supposed to, because it is not like the cops are going to get involved in this.
If you want the real legal detail, research the Magnusson-Moss act on Google.
Addressing it up front is the safest bet.

Any idea on the cost of a 1K mile service at a HD dealer?

As for cost...I was quoted that the first service was a 4 hour job @ $70/hr. + fluids and filter. When I went to pick it up, the service guy told me, "I don't know where HD gets 4 hours for this, it only took us 2 1/2."

I took my Uly in for the first service because I wanted them to do the check over and document any issues. No issues found! Bike runs great!

Thats what HD told me to!! But pops looked at the service manual and said no way it takes 4 hours. So we did it ourselves. Took us longer than 4 hours, but beer was involved.

Lancruza - I just took mine in and it was $280 with tax and that includes synthetic in the motor and primary. I totally understand you wanting to take it in. I have no problem doing things myself with the service manual, but I guess for this first service I was paying for piece of mind. The only thing that needed special attention for me was that the primary chain needed some adjustment. Other than that, everything else checked out just fine.

Thanks everyone for your replies. This board is such a great resource. I called my local dealer and made an appointment for this Saturday. He told me it would cost $200 for a 1K service.

200 nice, mine was 250 or 275. It was a piece of mind thing for me. I never worried about pulling a motor taking the crank out, but for some reason I was timid about the first time I changed the oil on my Buell. I think it was some scaredy cat mojo the HD shop put on my bike. After I spilled some oil it went away. I suggest that after you get the bike back, you take the dip stick out and shake some oil onto the ground. Remove the curse.

Take money to eat in the diner, Ride to eat, Eat to ride. Seriously Kegel's diner has some good food.
