Hey fork pros:

I'm in the middle of rebuilding a set of 2004 9sl forks for my fiance's Lightning. I have a 2003 Lightning manual and there is no info specific to the low model.

First question:
Type E fork oil(that's what is stock, right?)- I read conflicting info out there...is it 5w or 10w??

Second question:
How much oil to put into the low" model forks? Standard calls for 8 oz or 4.57 inches from the top....can I use the same measurement from the top? Or is there different amounts and measurements out there that are "official" for the low models?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I heard a while back, that type E might be 10w but hopefully someone knows for sure.

I use Expert Motul 20W

I don't know either.
But if the forks aren't leaking, measure how much comes out when you drain it.
Or, measure like a dipstick before draining.

Thanks Glitch.

Doesn't really help me, as I would really like to know what the stock "base point" is with oil- for example: if I were to use a 20w (prob thicker than she will ever want), if type E is 5w, it's 4x the thickness, if Type E is 10w, it's only double!

And your method would make sense...except one fork leaked and I drained both of them a while ago...doh!

OK, with regards to oil weight.
IIRC the stock oil is 5W the heavy is 10W and the heavy duty is 15W.
When using H-D, I use the heavy or the heavy duty, just because I like a stiff front end.
The 5W will work nicely.
WRT the amount of oil, give a reputable dealership a call, and ask for someone in the service dept.

When I replaced mine with 10W I had to back off the dampening quite a bit, to get the suspension back where I like it. This leads me to believe that the 5 weight or at least something lighter than 10 is a better choice.

Kinda depends on the source of information. 10wt Motul went into mine, they feel great.

Thanks for the info. Not the definitive answers I was hoping for on either question....but sort of progress in the right direction... : p
