I removed the handguards off of my 07 Cityx and never replaced the top stud/bolt that holds the levers on. Is it a hardware store bolt or do I need to get them from the dealer?

take the ones you pulled out to a hardware store and match it up to a grade 8 and you should be fine but the dealer part will look better and SHOULD be relatively cheep.

The levers pivot on these bolts, so I don't think a standard hardware store equivalent will work.

Get them from your dealer, its something like $10 for both brake and clutch.

I bet a grade 8 would get you by

quote:

Using a .250-inch diameter grade 8 fastener gives you the following shear capability:

A = Cross-sectional area of the fastener size (since bolt bodies/shanks have circular cross-sections, use area of a circle) = Pi x r2 where R (radius) = .250/2 = .125, therefore A = Pi x (.125)2 = .0491 square inches (in2)

Capability in shear = 91,000 lbs / in2 x .0491 in2 = 4468 lbs

if you can generate two thousand pounds of sheer force even with the mechanical advantage of the lever (minus the loss because the bolt is the pivot not the load) you have other things going on, and you will probably never need vise grips again.

it will hold you until your dealer can get some to you, or better yet a sponsor.

The grade isn't the issue of using hardware store bolts.

The issue is the OEM bolts have a specific diameter and length shoulder that the lever pivot on. Using a hardware store bolt will work, there isn't much torque on them, but without the correct sholder for the levers to seat on, they'll be floppy, and most likely will not pivot correctly. BAD IDEA when regarding your front brake and clutch. You kind of want those features to work correctly every time. Just leave the handguard parts on there for the week it takes to order the right pieces.

I think if you put those hand guards on your bike you would only be able to turn the bars a few inches before they hit the fairing.
