The day Buell's non compete clause with HD expires.

I can't wait.

that is the day before my next birthday. It would be a cool birthday present if EB unveiled a new bike.

what is your source for this bit of info out of curiosity?

Steve Anderson's article in the May issue of Cycle World says Erik's non-compete agreement will be up "in about a year". Both Court and Dave Guess have said everything in the article is basically accurate.

The Dale Franks blog has been mentioning this too. Good to see it's true.

Just think this time next year we may have 1190 street bikes...and lord knows what else!

Harley already looks so bad in all this and they will look even worse when Buell gets rolling again.

Yeah, but how much of the 1125/1190 belongs to HD? Are the patents for things like fuel-in-frame, ZTL rotors, etc. HD's or Erik's? Just because he doesn't have a non-compete after that date doesn't mean he can sell "Buell Motorcycles." He may have to develop something completely different. Again.

The 1125R is just the tip of the ice berg from Erik. He has a lot more up his sleeve. Hell the 1125R prototype complete with side mounted radiators and fuel-in-frame was built in the 80's.

It will be interesting to see what Erik can continue to use and what he will improve on and make from scratch.

I am an engineer for a manufacturing company and they own ALL of my patents. I am sure that if Erik makes bikes using the brake set-up and fuel in frame he will have to pay them at the very least. I am sure Harley has some very powerful lawyers.

LOL
Erik thought of Fuel in the frame WAY before harley So that is his.

The only patent that H-D owns with Fuel in frame is the frame break away steering head.

As for brakes, you think EB doesn't have somethin even crazier up his sleeve?

I dont know the early history of Buell. So I have no idea how much was designed and patented before the Harley venture. I am just saying general practice in manufacturing is that you do not own your patents the company does.

Who better to figure out how to circumvent the technicalities of a patent than the engineer who developed the gizmo in the first place. IF Erik doesn't have rights to these patents (and that has not been established) I'm sure he'll figure out ways to do things exactly like he wants to do them anyway.

I truly hope that he can someday produce 1125s and 1190s for street use. I also REALLY hope he will have an XB equivalent in the US market. But why didn't they just sell the brand if they did not own a considerable amount of the patents and processes, rather than let him compete against them in less than two years without making anything off of the brand? maybe just to sell parts??? This is an interesting conversation and I would like to know where he stands.

A good read...

I really enjoyed it. The more I learn about Mr. Buell and his motorbikes the more I love my bike!
