Remus Powerizer:
"..optimizes the pulses of the stock engine control unit (ECU) controlling the fuel supply through the injectors inside the throttle body. The powerizer is plugged inline into the wiring harness to the stock connectors operating the injectors by an adapter-arrangement. The internal state of the art micro controller of our unit analyzes these signals coming out from the stock ECU in real-time and generates, according to engine load and speed by an independent mapping, its own pulses actuating the injector solenoids. This new actuation scheme works cylinder-selectively guaranteeing an ideal air/fuel ratio for perfect combustion and thereby improved engine performance.."


OK, so I had been curious about the Remus for a long time and have never been able to find any information or reviews about it. The info on the Trojan Horse website was all I had before I ordered it. So I thought I'd post my thoughts in case someone else does a similar search. With the exchange rate and overseas shipping the total in dollars was 310. The exchange rate has been pretty good lately and Trojan gave me overnight shipping once they got it from Remus in Austria. So in effect it arrived exactly 7days after I ordered.


I've had my '03 xb9r for 5 years and it came with the buell race kit (ecm etc) and all I added was the american sport bike open airbox kit. However with the buell race pipe I would always get some good popping on the decel esp if I was downshifting into a corner. I had considered doing some direct ecm tweaking but I don't have the tech understanding and my goals were pretty simple.. Hopefully just a little more fuel for my freeflowing exhaust and intake. More fuel, less popping..


So you can understand why I responded to the line on the Trojan website: "Ideal when fitting aftermarket exhausts and airbox solutions to ensure perfect fueling throughout the rev range, without the need to make manual adjustments."


First thing, the instructions that came with it are great. Full color pics and very clear. There are 8 pages of instructions for something that I had plugged into the bike and I was able to fire it back up to check my connections in only 30 minutes flat. Plug and play. Sounded mean, just had to put everything back together and some finishing touches.


I had originally thought that this controller would plug into the ecm ports. But it actually plugs into the front and rear cylinder injectors and the throttle position sensor wire on the right side of the throttle body. So you have to pull off the airbox bottom and velocity stack, easy. Two more wires go to the neg terminal on the battery and you're finished with the connections.


The last thing to do is find a place to put the cigarette size controller box that has the circuit board/ brains. One nice feature is that the internal circuit board has a LED that flashes normal function or the error codes if anything isn't right. So the LED checked out for me and the bike was running just perfect as well.


The instructions advise to place the controller box at the base of the battery under the seat in the case of the R. But I already had my co2 cartridges stored there for flats. So I took off the tail bodywork and there is still alot of unused space between the passenger seat and top of the battery so I located it there alongside my bike alarm with plenty of room to spare. Because once it is installed you never have to touch the controller again, I thought this was a good place to put it - hidden under the plastic.


So all told I had the wiring locked down, secured and all the plastics back on in 2 more hours. It's a little embarrassing but I'm pretty anal about organizing wires, trying to make it look oem and was going at a very slow pace. Most people will be on the road in an hour and be done with it.


Conclusions:

Well, when I was ordering it I had anticipated that I would be able to turn the controller on and off when on a ride to see the differences. I based this on the pic from the Trojan website where you can see an on/ off switch. There was no switch on my unit so everything is based on a memory comparison as to how the bike used to ride before the install.

I'm guessing that the HP estimates are so high because it looks like they make the Remus Powerizer for cars too?... Anyway, I was real curious to get on the road and finally see for myself.


So after a few great rides..

1 If I had to do it all over again, I would def go for it. I feel like if I had spent a couple weeks messing with the ecm and dynoing it and got these results I'd be pretty happy with myself.

2 Sounds alot meaner and the exhaust note is lower and less choppy/ much more even.

3 The front wheel popped right up on me shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear, that had only happened before when I was going from 1st to 2nd. So I think I got a little more hp maybe, probably... can't prove it at any rate. Also, I don't do wheelies but I don't like to bounce the limiter either! I'm used to having a bit more time before I see red and have to shift. It's like a different bike.

4 Revving up to redline is smoother and feels much more substantial. So I feel like I got a bit more torque. The power feels much more linear as well. Very smooth/ no gaps

5 If I blip the throttle off idle (which I usually don't do), there is no more hesitation.

6 I could not, no matter how hard I tried, get it to pop on the decel. It just humms real loud and very evenly. (I have not tested it with the buell race pipe yet as I have a carbon fiber jardine fitted for the time being which would be even more likely to pop I would think)

7 The headers are running alot hotter than they used to. They are wrapped 2 layers thick so I can still grab them but they are hot. Is this consistent with more fuel going through the system? Maybe they are still kicking out moisture as I recently wet wrapped them.


I would say that if you are looking for something extra in performance but don't have a specific HP number you are trying to achieve and just want something simple and easy, I'd say treat yourself if you have the extra cash to blow. In my case I think the engine is running even better now and it's got more kick and snarl to it. And I finished the ride with some good parking lot props btw. Apparently my Buell is "sick!"

I was wondering about the Remus and the Free Spirits TFI and the Dobeck TFI. Good to hear someone actually used one and had good results. My question is: How does it know how much too adjust the injetors to?
