I want to put black header wrap on my bike. American Sport Bike sells it, but it's 60 bucks for 25feet. I want black, and I don't want it to fade or I don't want anything cheap or whatever. Where would be the best place to buy black header wrap??

Yeah for sure. I've bought stuff from there before but I thought 60 bucks for 25 feet of header wrap is kinda pricey. Maybe I should just buy it from them just to give them the business.

i have nothing but great things to say about American Sport Bike as well but when you can get 50' or more for less elsewhere, i would have to opt for that. ive seen it at local auto stores for $50 and ive seen it for even cheaper on ebay. http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p3907.m38. l1313&_nkw=black+header+wrap&_sacat=See-All-Catego ries

I used to have mine wrapped.
I just bought the plain kind and painted it with high-temp exhaust paint.
Any time it started to look kind of bad, I'd just re-paint.

The DEI kit comes with the high temp black silicone spray. The can has plenty to keep the wrap as black as you would like. I've used the spray 4 times and still have about a half can.

Al won't sell you junk. Yea, you can probably find something cheaper on ebay, but you said you didn't want junk. You do get what you pay for from Al.

Yeah that DEI kit is pretty sick! That would last you for a long time with those two 50foot rolls of wrap!

Hey can you wrap your headers without taking the headers off, btw?!?!

I got the DEI "natural" wrap and some white paint. Need to try and pull my header this weekend and wrap it since the temp is finally back up to where working on the bike isn't miserable.

I used the DEI kit in black, spray it about twice a year with high temp silicone. Had it on over two years, still looks good.

i did it on the bike. its not too hard and is a lot faster than rotating the motor.you cant get the wrap all the way up on the back header but you can make it at least out of sight

If I had to take the headers off, I'd not have wrapped them.
It's a tight squeeze to take the headers off without rotating the engine, and impossible to get the headers back on (wrapped) without rotating the engine.
So, I started at the front header, wrapped down to the muffler, back up to the rear header, back down to the split, and back up to the top of the front header.
Yep, that's a double wrap.
Not sure if the XB12 could do a double, since the headers, are bigger around.

Maybe I'll start on the rear header and see how it goes before I pull the header off, if it goes on without too much swearing then I'll probably just do it. Makes it harder to paint though.

You can wrap the headers on the bike (I have, twice). It is best to wet the wrap before applying it as this cuts down on fibers and dust everywhere. It is alsoa good idea to wear rubber gloves.

I started with the rear header and wrapped to the collector. I then wrapped the front one down to the end of the header. I used regular hose clamps on the ends.

I used the silver hi temp paint after it had the wrap had dried. Use aluminum foil on the motor to keep it from getting paint on it.

It's a fun little project that doesn't take up too much time.

I was going to throw some plastic or paper back there. Can you really get paint all the way onto the rear part of the header with it mounted?

(Was too cold to go out and check for myself)

I was looking to wrap the headers also. Was going to take them off to do it. Do you HAVE to rotate the motor to get them back on???

Thanks!

I polished the headers and now I'm thinking of wrapping them, yea I can change my mind more often then I change my pants. My bike is still under warranty is there anything that would void the warranty by wrapping the headers?

I don't know much about header wrap what are the pros and cons?

I would assume that the pro's are less heat on your legs and cosmetics? and the cons being a higher engine temp and thus more strain on your fans.

Anyone care to fill in what I'm missing?

Why is there a higher engine temp if the exhaust is not being restricted?

The only place you might see a temp increase is at the exhaust port.

I'm not an expert and i may be wrong. I was just going off the assumption that wrapping the headers would insulate them and thus allow less heat dissipation from the engine. Perhaps it's a negligible heat difference like I said I was looking for info myself.

Header wrap has some good pros.

Less heat to your legs.

More heat retained in the header improves HP.

Cons; RUST!

Header wrap retains any water that ends up on it and doesn't dry out as fast making them prone to rust.

A side note, if you park your bike outside, cats will piss on them and it takes miles to burn it off, hopefully you'll be wearing a flip face helmet so you can puke. BTDT.
