My 09 xb12scg sat for a few weeks w/o starting it so it wasn't a surprise when it took a second to start but after a long ride it hesitated to start again. I think its a bad ground. Where do I look?

I know there is a ground on the left or right seat rail under your seat.

If you have a DC voltmeter, try checking if the bike's charging by putting the meter leads across the battery terminals and revving about 2500 rpms.

If the volts rise to around 14 VDC, the charging system is likely OK.

If you only get around 12 VDC and not rising much beyond that, there could be a parasitic drain somewhere or a bad battery or a defect in the charging system. If this is the case then more troubleshooting is needed.

If you just want to look for bad grounds, check the condition of the negative battery cable and its ends where it's connected/bolted. Should be shiny metal at those contact points.

There's also a short braided ground cable under the airbox floor that makes a ground connection from the engine to the frame.

The VR needs a clean ground connection where it's bolted, I believe. It also needs a good connection at the "77" connector from the stator to the VR; this means no melted or charred contacts or insulation there.

I had to re-crimp the ground and positive battery cables on my 09 12. The ground pulled out of the terminal by hand!

Very first place to check is the negative terminal of the battery. If that is loose at all, it can keep enough juice from flowing to initiate a start.

Thanks for all the suggestions I'm getting a DC voltmeter today to begin the search. It starts and all but I don't want to be 100 miles from home and have a problem.

May sound dumb, but check the battery connections. This same type of thing happened to me. My bike was running and I leaned on the seat waiting on my brother. The bike died. It wouldn't start back up. I sat on it and tried again. It started, I got off and it died. I pulled the seat and the ground to the battery was loose.
