Please Help...

Just wondering if anyone has any idea about this problem Im having with my 08 XB12r Firebolt... When Im out riding my bike and go to take off really quick off the line it sounds like it backfires out of the intake and sputters, and the problem even happens when I rev the motor up at a stop... Have had it into the dealership twice now and the first time they told me that there was nothing wrong with my bike so I rode it a little bit longer and the problem was still there, so I took it in again but this time to a different dealership, they told me it was a cracked intake and they replaced it under my factory warranty... now the problem is back not 3 months later and my warranty runs out next month... Any ideas what this could be would be helpful with speaking to the service department... Thanks for your input and time...

If they replaced the intake it now may be slightly loose. I'd bring it back to them.

@ Buell

The same "backfire" happens on my bike (2009 XB12Scg). Mine only happens when I try to warm start the bike, so I'm not really sure what's going on. It only happens about once per month.....

With the bike running, spray a little starter fluid at the intake seals.
If the idle changes, you have a leak, take it back.
If not, there's something else going on.

Also, if they messed with the intake, did they reset the TPS?
If they didn't, they should have.

2008, you can reset the TPS yourself.

Buell's do this. I call it sneezing & others may call it coughing. I've found it fixable with one or both of the following:

1) don't blip your throttle off idle like so many crotch-rocket riders love to do. Our bikes (especially 12s) have long strokes and you're asking alot of it when you quickly open the throttle at low rpms. Raise the rpms up to ~2k before you begin releasing the clutch lever to "take off really quick off the line".

2) Install a Race ECM. I did this an tried getting the bike to sneeze, and thankfully, to no avail. Reason for this fix is probably because the Race ECM has advanced timing.

Good luck!

I disagree that Buell's as a matter of course do not suffer the issue described here. Mine sure doesn't. I agree that snapping the throttle to wide open at very low RPM is prone to cause less than optimum response from the engine.

Taylor (Buellxb12r425),

I'd first try a TPS reset.

FYI for '08 & later Buell V-Twin owners:

To perform a TPS reset on '08 and later Buell V-Twin motorcycles:

1. Switch the Run/Stop switch to the Run position.

2. Turn ignition key to "on" position.

3. With the engine off, rotate the throttle grip from the closed throttle position to the wide open throttle position and back to closed position 3 times while holding the throttle grip against each stop for one full second each time.

4. Cycle the key off and back on.

5. Ride, Lean, Smile, Live!

Let us know what you find. : )

Thanks to everyone who posted me back, got alot of good starting points for when I take it back to the dealership for service. Since my warranty is running out next month, I would rather have Harley fit the bill insted of having to take it out of my own pocket...

Anyone know if this problem keeps occurring after my warranty runs out, will the dealership "grandfather" this in as a ongoing problem and fit the bill?

Thanks again to everyone... I will post about this when it is out of service in the next few weeks...
