I am in the process of receiving the parts (2005 Front Pulley, 2005 Rear Pulley, 2008+ Belt, 2005 Upper Belt Guard, 2005 Lower Belt Guard, 2005 Belt Tensioner, and 2004 Front Belt Guard) to convert my 2003 XB9R's belt to the new system. I received the front belt guard today and it is identical, from what it looks like, to the 2003 front belt guard; however, Al from American Sport-bike, said I would need to replace ALL the guards. Is this true? Thank you in advance!

I got the "kit" from American Sport Bike for my bike (same as yours). At that time I had already removed all of the guards except for the one around the front pulley. With the belt being thicker and all the other changes being made, the front guard absolutely must be changed along with the belt tensioner (the angle/length of the bracket is different). From what I understand, if you are using the other guards, they will need to be switched over. I saw one instance where someone modified the 2003 guards by cutting away where it rubbed but it didn't really look like it fit correctly.

One note...ensure that you check the rear brake cylinder line clearance between the top of the belt and the hard line coming out of the cylinder behind the right heel guard...some have reported it might rub...mine didn't and it has not been a problem in the last 30,000+ miles I have put on the new setup.

I was actually wondering about the rear master cylinder. Do you think I will have to replace this with a newer one if I regularly carry a passenger? Thanks in advance.

I never felt the need for one...but I don't have passengers on my bike. You should be adjusting your suspension for the passenger to account for the extra weight. I would check just to make sure...I took the pivot bolt out of the rear shock and used a jack to lower the bike down well beyond where I figured it would move under normal use.

I still had about 1/8" clearance at that point so I put a bit of foam around the hard line and zip-tied it on there to see if it ever rubbed...never did after 4000-5000 miles so I took it off and never had an issue with it since.

From what I understand, the newer rear brake cylinder is a bit longer so the hard line is up a bit higher...you can measure the difference from the top mount bolt up to the top of the cylinder. I want to say it was about 1/4" taller when I measured it at the dealer.

From the measurements and calculations I ran, the suspension would have to move about 6.5" or so for the belt to strike the banjo bolt. The spec on the bike is 5.1", so it would be substantial overtravel for it to hit.

I've never hit on mine with the 03 brake master cylinder. But I don't carry passengers on that bike either. If in doubt, get one.
