what to do with the rubber part? remove it, cut it in a particular place???

the rubber flap just hung there... didnt bother anything.

after messing with it more, it's gonna look but ugly if i put it on at all, seems the whole thing (metal and rubber) will show.

now i'm torn, remove all the rubber or remove the whole damn part.

also, did anyone replace the "post" in the swingarm support with a shorter bolt? i'm planning on it, but i'm wondering if it's there for any other reason than to hold the guards.

(state of disassembly until tires get mounted tomorrow.)

Yeah, that bolt is the only reason I haven't pulled mine off. Somebody please let me and lothodon know so we can take what looks like headgear for the swing arm off.

oconnor, went to my local dealer today to drop my tires off for mounting and took a GOOD LONG look at the 12 setup.

the bolt i'm thinking off, the one with the post that mounts the guard is short on the 12 swingarm support. i just happened to have a short one from my sporty that fit perfect.

as for the silver backplate with the rubber part (pic i posted) it doesn't exist on the 12's at all. so, to answer my own question, the whole damn thing is outta there when i reassemble.

When I tried to remove the metal backing plate with the rubber piece, some of the bolts holding the pulley cover were too long without the metal piece behind it (they would not tighten without bottoming out), so I put the metal piece back in.

As far as the long bolt that went through the guard, I still have it and the bushing on. I just need to go get a short bolt.

i thought about the width of the metal piece myself, so i fabbed a washer with a small hole (just enough for the screw) to make up the difference.

on a side note, threads like this are what make this THE buell forum on the net. lack of attitudes and amazingly quick and intelligent replies. so glad i found this forum.

Ok, Lothodon,

Just to add in some of the usual bad web attitude. I think removing the metal piece may cause the engine to run too cool, break in half, run lean, run rich. Well just add in whatever silly statement you like here. . And you know, it will void your warranty.

The long bolt just secures the '03 belt guard. The '04 belt guard (upper) doesn't need that extension. Replace the long bolt with a short bolt #AA0507.2CZB.

03 to 04 belt upgrade as posted by Court on the XBoard:

i figure i'm gonna run with no guards until it breaks, then use that as an excuse to upgrade to the 04 system.
