I have installed an open airbox conversion kit (the one sold on American Sport Bike) and I was wondering if I need to adjust the ECM fuel ratio?

I have a Race ECM and the race exhaust... is it going to run to lean now?

More air equals leaner. So yeah the bike will be a bit lean, I doubt enough to harm the bike though.

anyone from AZ who has ecm spy that could monitor the bikes running condition just to put my fears at ease?

EDIT: what visible signs would I see if the bike does lean up to much?
- Carbon in the exhaust?
- Funny sounds from the motor?
What signs will I get that lets me know whats going on?

I've got ECMspy and can check it for you.
but I can tell you from experience, that is exactly what the race ECM is made for, a free breathing intake, and free flowing exhaust.
You just need to take it out and put about 50 miles on it at various speeds, to let the ECM relearn the new mod.
Really, the open airbox is perfect for the setup that you have on your bike.
I'm in the northwest part of the valley, near 35th ave and the 101.

Im not too sure the race ecm was mapped for an open airbox, just a high flow filter and the race pipe.

That being said I'm going to try the new race ecm with my Drummer and K&N first to see how she runs. Then I'll put the open box on and see if there's any negative effects.

The best way to tell how it is running is by reading the plugs.

white: lean/hot
brown: correct
black: rich

Ive got the race ecm, pipe, and k&n filter on my 03 XB9 with the open airbox kit. it ran a little spooky for a little while after i installed the kit. before my last ride, i had it idling while i was gearing up and all of the sudden it smoothed out on the idle and now she runs like a raped ape. i think the ecm and what not finally adjusted to the increased airflow. you'll be fine

Have a look at American Sport Bike's A/F charts in the XB Exhaust Shootout. The tested bikes used open airbox with Race ECM map. There's a chart there for XB9 with your combination.

I've had a few conversations with Al about this very question. His experience/testing shows that the with a stock pipe, the ECM is able to scale the fueling with an open airbox. Apparently, the flow increase still falls within the bike's range of self-adjustment.

That being said, I ran the race map, open airbox, and Drummer can on my XB9 and it ran great for a 9. It's a decent non-custom combination IMO.

I am glad to hear the majority of folks think that it will be just fine.

I will have to let it adjust for a bit and then pull the plugs like rydberg suggests and see how it looks internally.

I've done tons of track time (including races) with this configuration on three different XB9 bikes, using either race can or Drummer, (MUCH preferred Drummer), dating back to 2003, and absolutely no indication whatsoever of an overly-lean condition; the plugs always look immaculate.

Yeah thanks for all the great info here guys! I didn't realize all of the bikes on the American Sport Bike shoot out ran an open airbox.

Now spring has to get it's azz here!!!

Should be just fine. I'm running a Drummer with the stock ECM and stock Air filter on an '07 XB12 which came with the open air box. I'm sure by just switchin' the pipe it is running a little lean, but lean is mean... to an extent.

That whole reading the plugs thing works for any combustion engine which uses spark plugs. Old trick from before all this computer stuff.
