Hi. I picked up an 1125R in October. I didn't like the bike at first. That all changed recently and I can't stop exploring the bikes capacities. As this is my first sportbike I'm having to break a lot of bad habits learned from riding heavy cruisers with titanic-class stearing.

Anyway, I still have an 08 nightster thats just taking up space in my garage so I was thinking about selling it and picking up another buell for a daily-driver. I really like the 1125r and I don't want to put lots of miles on it. The nightster has 40,000 miles and its not-yet two years old. I've taken it cross country on interstates, end-to-end on US routes, and ridden hundreds of miles of forestry service roads. Bikes are the virus and bike-camping is the secondary infection.

I'd love a Ulysses but I'm 5' 9" tall and 175lbs. Besides the height challenge, I'm financially challenged too. The HD is costing me about $150/month and insurance is twice what the 1125r costs.

So I guess what I'm looking for is something thats comfy on long rides, has plenty of storage, is fun to toss around in the twisties, can absorb forestry-service roads (within reason), gets great gas mileage, needs little attention, and can do interstate speeds when necessary (because sometimes i get lost in the ride and need to high-tail it home).

I'd like to keep the total cost below $6,000.

Should I keep on the lookout for a used xb12xt, or would another model suit my purposes.

When I bought the pig I didn't ask questions and later found that I could have gotten an 883 and upgraded to 1200 and saved lots of money (and experienced better suspension). If there is a buell-equivalent of this scenario (buy a lesser model and fixher-up) i'd like to know about it.

Any insight would be appreciated.

have you shopped around? i'm 18 years old with a 9R, and this is my first sports bike (not my first bike) and all state quoted me at over 2k a year for full coverage, and 61 a month for liability. i did some shopping around and nation wide insurance Co. gave me a quote at like $28 a month for liability or something much better like that. shop around with a bunch of insurance Co.'s and see what you can get

as far as buells go, i'm guessing that would be your best bet. if your open to othe bikes, i'm sure you could find a lot of different bikes

I have had a 2003 XB9R for six years and love it. I've gone all over with it. I recently got an XB12XT and really like it too. It's super comfortable for rider and passenger, doesn't require you to be Stretch-Armstrong to reach the ground, and it'll go anywhere and carry all kinds of crap in the bags.

I think if you really look hard, you can find an XT in the $6K ballpark but most are between $6-7K used. If you can't find an XT in your price range, then a good substitute might be a Lightning Long or a TT. Both have a nice comfortable seating position with pretty good leg room for those longer days in the saddle. Both can be fitted with aftermarket bags and will haul quite a bit. And they are both still a blast to carve up the mountain roads. I suspect you'll find TT's in the $4500-5500 range and SS's not too far above that.

Good luck!

How about a used R1100GS? You could easily find one under $5K, it will run for 200K miles no sweat, fairly easy maintenance (6K valve adjustments, but the heads are right there and no shims to mess with - easy). They sit lower than the Uly as well. They supposedly get 50 mpg at 55 mph, but realistically they run all day at 80 mph at 37-40 mpg. I've run a buddy's R1150GS at 3 track days and have had a blast. Surprisingly well-handling bike for about 525lbs wet. Kawi Versys or 650/1000 VStrom would be other candidates if you want newer technology. KLR/DR 650 would also be good (I've had a couple of both) but they lack a little on the freeway. If you are like me, you want to move it out when you need to get home.

There are brand new STT's going for $6200-6500 or so, use the bike finder from the Buell website to locate them.

You'd need a different seat and passenger pegs and brackets for two up riding.

Maybe Ft_bstrd could get one moved to his dealership in TN for you?

I just got an 07 TT. I'm about 6'1" and 150 lbs, and if I were an inch taller I could flat foot it. Unfortunately being winter I haven't been able to ride it much yet but I can tell already that it will be pretty comfortable for distance riding. I also might pick up the Ss touring seat (51916-06Y,$221.95)
It says it lowers the riding position by an inch, but that is probably referring to the Ss's riding position, not the TT.

Anyhoo the OTD price was about 6300 and it's costing me $65-70 a month to insure with full coverage. Not bad for a 22 year old with a speeding record. I quoted an 1125 and they wanted about double what the bike payments would have been!

I picked up a used 07 STT with 7000 miles on it for $3500 bucks.

Keep a eye out... there are some monster deals out there.

The TT seat is a little taller than the SS, so it will be more of a drop. The touring seat is my pick out of all the not-aftermarket SS/STT seats.

I picked up a pristine used 2006 XB12X with 4000 miles for $4200 in September. And that was before the Buell bombshell. There are some deals out there.

It is tall for me. At 5'8", I can't even get one flat-foot down (stock seat). A big toe is about it. I don't have an issue with it other than pedaling backwards: that is out of the question. Engaging reverse means getting off of the bike for me.

The right tires on most types of "standard" bikes will get you down fire roads just fine.

I have an 08 XB12S for sale. Payoff balance is $5,686.46. BLK in color, no mods. Approx. 4,520 miles give or take some. Currently I also have an 1125R I'm paying for. I wanted to keep the Lighting for my wife and get her riding but can't afford to.

Well... I'm feeling like a traitor now, being the only one to rec any non-Buell bikes. I saw the PO wanted to do some fire roads and wasn't sure about the Uly... don't throw me out of the club!

Don't feel bad, traitor. The bikes you recommended are great options.
