What's you guys thoughts on this? Do you really think I'll need the programmable ecm for just a Drummer and open air box, at $500 more? Or will the Race ECM be sufficient?

Granted I'll get a better tune with the programmable, but is worth the extra cash? I know a lot of you guys run the 07 and earlier race ecm's with your mods with good results. I'm thinking this race ecm should do just as good.

Thoughts?

For the money spent you won't feel the difference Adam. My bike runs the race ECM,Drummer SS and K&N. Enjoy the bike. If your going to do internal's.... then its the way to go.

Dana, yeah that's what I was thinking too. I'm not going to do any internal mods to the engine. Just have the pipe, K&N, and open box.

Artic, you're always on top of these matters, you da man! I knew you'd chime in.

I want to know the answer to this as well. I have a Drummer and K&N for my 09 and that is going to be the extent of my performance mods. So I really would like to know if a "race" ECM is going to be necessary or not for the bike to run properly.

the kdfab website used to recommend that you use the race ecm (the non programmable one) with the drummer and I think though I am not sure, they designed that pipe to run well using the race ecm.

Donald,

Kevin has done his job well with designing the Drummer to run well with the Race Ecm. I really don't know where you would get that idea??? Thing is if you want to spend the dough to get the programmable ecm them bring the bike to a good dyno tech at a dealer to maybe pick up 3 or 4 HP over what it will do with just a race ECM be my guest. You'll be into it for nice chunk for nothing major. Me I'll watch what I eat.... get a little more exercise, feel better about myself and go faster because I lost weight. What does that cost??? Well just a little discipline. Also your saving money because you aren't eating the garbage. So yeah FREE HORSE POWER !!!

The Drummer does work good with the old Race ECM, but a retune would help bring it to life and get rid of decel popping.

Froggy,

I've had two Drummer on my 12. The first one was Kevin's second one produced for a 12. That one or my SS has zero decel popping. I've had friends that had them also without popping. What are you gaining by a retune??? You guys crack me up over little gains HP. Ride the damn bike and enjoy it. Wanna do more then get intouch with Brian at Rev Perf. Hell hes fairly local to me and tell's me the same.

so the older race ECM modules made by Buell will work on the 08+ bikes and provide better performance than the stock ECM?

I am personally doing it for the sound. The performance from the factory on these bikes, is more than enough for me. I am one who likes to hear the rumble of the v-twin. I am not trying to get any extra HP out of the mods, but I want the bike to run right without harming the motor. So will the bike run fine on the stock ECM with a K&N and Drummer, or will a new ECM from EBR be needed to function properly?

Granted, I am looking to use this for STREET only and just want things to run right.

Bads1, when I had the regular Drummer on my XB with stock ECM, it ran decent, popped a ton on decel. I put on my Race ECM, it ran better, and reduced the popping. I had it retuned to match, and it ran even better. It felt smoother throughout the power band and eliminated 95% of the popping. Did it gain a few HP? I don't know, I don't care if it did, it rode better for the way I ride 98% of the time. If I wanted more horsepower, I would get something with a better motor. Oh wait, I did, I got two : D

It will run with out the ECM but your bike will run a bit lean.

The EBR race ECM by its self optimised for the race exhaust and free flowing air filter is $250 but if you want to take the dive for the fully programmable one it is $750

Now by saying race exhaust, does this mean its optimized for the old race can that Buell produced or will just about any can, i.e. a Drummer work as well?

Froggy for the money spent I don't think you got it all that much smoother. I've ridden these bike from mapped to modded. From just about every pipe imaginable. They are what they are. You believe what you wanna believe. Me I'll save my money. I've been around these things long enough that I've learned.

From what I understand EBR is going to be making another race can simular to the old one so I would assume that is the one they are talking about.

@Bads1 - do you suggest just running the stock ECM and saving the money? Like I said before, I am a strictly a street rider just looking for some sound.

The programmable ecm seems to be intended for the hard core racer with internal mods. Not just your average joe with a pipe and a filter. Another thing, it might be hard to find a dealer or dyno place that is familiar with the programmables software. I called my dealer and they have to get back to me. Doesn't sound very promising. And I wouldn't want to be a ginny pig.

If need be, down the road if you are not happy with the race ecm you can always upgrade to the programmable for $500. No money lost.

As Eric stated, he will/might be making a race ecm with a map set up for a Drummer/filter. If that's the case, hopefully if one buys the current race ecm, he'll allow you to send it back to him where he can reflash it with the Drummer map.

I'm going for the race ecm.

My understanding is that the new Race ECM is similar to the old one in regards to what it is tuned for, i.e. the buell race can and filter, and of coarse it will be better than the stock ECM or any piggy back unit. If you buy the one for 250 you have to send it back to EBR if you want to eventualy tune it so it can be modified to be programmable. Im ordering the tunable ECM Monday. I will have it on the dyno in the next week or so and have the values as soon as I can.

The new race pipe will not be much different than the older ones in respect to the power curve and HP gains, also it is not ready yet.

This is a response I got a few weeks ago.

As more units get out and after we get the fundamentals of the race business running we will hopefully have time to look at more maps, or to see if we can pass learning/mapping on from other customers with aftermarket parts. Drummers are a fairly common set up and I would imagine that would be one that would likely be addressed sooner than later.

I think for the time being, I am going to hold off to wait and see what EBR comes up with for running with the Drummer. I spoke with Erik on Facebook one evening and he stated they were looking into it because it was a popular choice among Buell owners. He gave me a similar answer to Artic12R

Is anyone in the Baltimore Area? I just purchased an 08+ Preprogrammed ECM and if i'm not 100% satisfied with the performance increase, i'm considering getting it custom mapped by a Baltimore area tuning shop. I have a few in mind and if anyone else feels the same way as I do, i could let them know they have a few customers and should purchase the Racing ECM tuning software ($500) to tuner our bikes. That'd save us all a few bucks!

The software is essentially free. You are paying $500 to "unlock" the ECM itself. So, it will cost $500 per ECM.

Ok guys, I have ordered the Programmable ECM for my bike. I will put it in as it comes to see the difference it makes and look at the air/fuel on the dyno before I tune it. Then it will go to North Carolina for the tune. As soon as I ride it I will give a status.
