Replaced my tires 12/09 at 5000 miles. All ok. I just serviced my 2006 XB12Ss last Sat. at 8000 miles and all was well. Rode 250 miles and my belt is LOOSE. Seems to have stretched. Alot.
WTF?!?
I think the belt was/is defective.
Anyone else have this issue?
Thanks in advance.

Re-check the torque on axle.

It does stretch a little. Perfectly normal.

A little stretching, yes.

But this much? I can almost take the belt off the pulley by siding it to the side.

Axle is torqued correctly.

Idler pulley tight.

Having roadraced my XB9R for three years and doing multiple track days, all on the stock belt drive system and I haven't had anywhere near the stretch that is on my street ridden XB12Ss now.

Strange.

When you serviced it, what exactly did you work on? Was it just an oil change or did you do anything else? Just wondering.

Changed all fluids and changed the oil filter and checked all fasteners, cables, brakes, tire pressures, etc.
I also installed rim strips. Had the bike on a stand on the lift turning the wheels as I applied the strips.
Everything was OK 250 miles ago.

I would not ride the bike with a loose belt.

The belt is made of spectra or kevlar strands that do not stretch that much, unless they have begun to fail.

I would take the belt off, inspect it for cracks, and broken reinforcing strands.

Put it next to a new belt. If it is much larger than a new one, change it.

If not, change it anyway. Having a belt break whilst underway is no fun.

Belt 'stretches' as swing arm swings down: it's tighter without rider and mo' tighter on rear stand.

Bike is now in the shop and is undergoing a belt replacement. I did not want to ride the bike as it was. Way too loose.
Was told the belt is possibly failing internally, as in the cords have ruptured/separated. No outwardly visible damage noted as of yet.
Thanks for the input.

I can almost pull my belt off of my XB as well. Its been like that for 15K miles. I will worry about it if and when it breaks.

RPM,

You might want to re-think your belt replacement plan.

Just imagine that you are accelerating hard in heavy traffic, and all of a sudden, it lets go.

Not a pretty picture, right?

Don't ask.
