Deciding on whether to purchase a new 09 XB12X and would like a few questions answered by the forum members if possible...

The timing chest has changed considerably on the 09 XB series, compared to let's say the first year 06 XB12X Ulysses. From what little I know, it involves the four cams running directly in aluminum on the case side, compared to needle bearings in the previous generation motor, changes to the oil pump (probably to increase the flow rate?) and what other generational changes am I looking at here ?

Have these upgrades in design ended up being improvements, are the rebuild aspects still as good as before and have there been any problems/regrets with the changes? How difficult lately has it been, to order and receive the 2010 rider comfort kit upgrade, now that HD's foolishly ended production of Buells? I'd like to upgrade this 09 Ulysses, with this component package if at all possible.

I'm considering this purchase because of the extremely attractive discounted price, the fact I've always liked the Buell Ulysses model, the pleasure of having ridden a friend's 2001 M2 in the past and most importantly, the fact my 2004 Suzuki DL1000 Vstrom handles poorly when loaded for bear at higher cruising speeds and has been a largely disappointing bike to me, for my intended purposes...

Thanks to all, for any and all advice !

The changes were based on development made from the XBRR race program. The new oiling system removes one of the last weaknesses of the older bikes, the crappy oil pump. The entire lower half of the engine was redesigned for the 2008 model year. I am yet to hear a single bad thing about the new models.

The comfort kit is still easily obtainable, I recommend trying to get the dealer to throw it in as part of the deal buying the bike, as it is a bit of a pain to install all the components.

It is quite a machine, but it is way more refined than the M2 you rode. If you haven't yet, ride one, but don't forget your checkbook : )

The only disadvantage I've heard/seen with the 08+ bikes, is the worse fuel economy.

I honestly feel mixed about that, as I was able to put 1000 miles on a brand new 09 Uly, and it was getting nearly the same fuel economy as my 06. I blamed the difference being the motor not being broken in. I'm certain after a few thousand more miles it would of been identical.

Is there any reason the 08+ should get worse milage? Seems like most of the changes relative to additional sensors, DDFI 3, and the associated smoothed-out power would suggest it would be running more efficiently and get better milage, if anything...

I do not think there is any reason the 08+ should be getting worse mileage. But the average person is getting worse mileage.
