It seems that my tranny on the 9r decided to give me issues. Coming home from work one night i'm pulling down my street and as i'm going up thru the gears, 1st and 2nd are normal, but when i shift into 3rd, its like neutral. Same for 4th and 5th - nothing. There was not one sign of trouble or anything indicating a problem, so i guess i gotta split the cases. I may end up replacing the whole unit but can't remember if the 12 and 9 use the same gears, and will the '06-newer trannys fit in the old cases? Might as well replace with the better, newer unit if possible.

Thanks ya'll

Remove the clutch and primary drive and check the counter shaft retaining screw - I'll bet the screw has backed out enough to float the shaft out of alignment.
Don't keep riding it, when it comes completely out it will make a big mess!!!

Make sure the primary slack, clutch ramp and fluid level are set perfectly. Easy stuff first before splitting the cases.

Also try loosening the secondary drive nut(front drive belt sprocket) and roll the bike back and forth in gear, then re torque to specification.

The gears are the same from 9 to 12. The primary chain was different, giving the 9 shorter overall gearing. 06+ XB models have a different transmission than previous years, I do not know if it will retrofit.

It won't retrofit. There is an indention will a small retainer bearing (hard to explain w\o pics) that is too small on the 05 and below cases. I had to purchase a previous year case half to mate with an older one I had and shot my plans down for an 06. Trial and error for me, I can save you the time.

With some machining, it looked like a possibility, but I want to get mine on the road and didn't have time to experiment much with it.
