I have a 2009 Buell XB12Scg. How will the buell race ECM effect my performance. I have free flowing exhaust, K&N and plan on modifying the air box. I am looking for an ECM upgrade that will give me what I am looking for. I'm not so sure about uploading new values because I am not familiar with the perimeters. Looking for some insight. Thank you for your time.

From what I understand, a race ECM is not available for the '09???????

You will need to tune the race ecm for your bike.

Yes, it will come with all the tuning software for it.

Currently, it would probably be cheaper and easier to get the bike tuned with Directlink.

There is more than "just the year" different.

Up to '07 (when there were "race" ECMs available), the bikes used a cam sensor for timing and you had to manually set the idle speed and throttle position sensor. This was DDFI-II.

08-up went to a crank sensor for timing, auto TPS setting, and an IAC motor for idle control. DDFI-III; totally different system from II.

IAC = idle air control valve

Now that Erik Buell Racing can sell the true race ECM, you can get into ALL engine controls, sensors and limits - regardless of year.

We all know there are lots of things to do to this engine to enhance performance. I am at the beginning of my journey with the mods. I would agree that direct link would be easiest for the years to come but to day without cables and direct link what performance would I get out of the race ECM alone.I believe on a latter date I can still use direct link to modify the race ECM as well right?

I think it would be more helpful to know what you were trying to accomplish by adding the ECM changes. You state what you have done to the bike - air cleaner, exhaust, airbox mod - but then you simply ask will it "give me what I am looking for".

*What* are you looking for? Do you have a dead spot? Power shortages at a certain RPM? Lean condition causing detonation and heat?

If we don't know the problem...it's tough to come up with an answer : )

I want more horse power! I would like to see the MPH clime faster in acceleration. Top speed not an issue. I know the drive can be changed but I prefer starting with the engine. I am happy with the ratios.

I under stand the timing is retarded for stock bikes. I also under stand the bike can do so much more with simple mods like ECM, Airbox, Exhaust.

The current Buell Race ECM is not just a plug and play unit. It comes with a stock calibration and you have to do the tuning from there. Buying a direct link for the race ECM is completely a waste as you already get all of the control you need with the Buell PCM Tool software that comes with the ECM. You won't get any extra performance by just buying the ECM, plugging it in, and riding. Dyno tuning will definately be required. They are available in DDFI-2 form as well as DDFI-3.

OK SO I need to be looking foe the PCM tool soft ware. This must come separate or with the purchase of a new stock ECM. To use this soft ware I will need windows correct.

Can't you just get the cable and soft ware to program the current ECM????

Yes, with Directlink. But currently Directlink support is limited at best and does not support all ECM calibrations.

The PCM Tool software that is provided with a race ECM can only be used on race ECM's, it can't be used on a stock ECM. Direct link can be used on a stock ECM, but it doesn't provide all of the calibration parameters that are available from Buell.

OK race ECM it is. So tell me about the perimeters and settings. Because I don't have the money to take the bike to a dealer I have to more or less play by ear. Maybe this is a bad idea.

Only1Beard, I sent this to your E-mail, but figured I would post it here as well.

You can't really tune properly by ear, sound only gives a very small percentage of whats actually going on with a motor. The race ECM is identical to a stock ECM in function, the only difference is that it comes with the software to actually make changes. This software can only be used with race ECM's, it won't work with a stock one. For an XB, the race ECM will only come with a production calibration. The only easy changes you could make would be to turn off some safety features and raise rev limits. Anything other than that is going to require some time on a dyno.

You can ask around for the software so that you can see what it's like, there are a lot of guys out there that have copies of it. You also need to know though that it was not intended to be a consumer product. The software was an engineering tool for the calibrators at Buell, so it is very configurable and customizable, but it lacks any real visual aides and is not very user friendly.

Also, it appears from another post that Erik will be selling pre-programmed ECM's without the software for $250, problem is I don't know of any late model XB cals that exist through Buell other than the production calibrations. There are a few different ones for the 1125R however based on the 2009 AMA builds for Moto-GT and DSB. This means you are probably looking at around $750 for the whole package, which I believe is what it cost before the closure as well.

One another note the race ECM does not set off the engine light if the active exhaust valve is disconnected.
