I just sent my muffler off to Odie to be worked and I was wanting to change the air filter and get a tune on my bike but everything like the ECM spy is listed up to 08 only. What are all my options for tuning my 09 Firebolt other than a power commander? Thanks in advance

Now you CAN get the legitimate race ECM from Erik Buell Racing. Something to think about is getting maps emailed and having somebody you might call with questions.

You can even share maps with racers and get suggested changes.

(and if I recall, EBR is now able to sell the legit race module to non-racers now)

Just to qualify... the race ECM is still intended for off road use. Using it on the road is probably illegal in every state in the US, just like that modified muffler.

Where can I get the race ECM and how much do they cost? And I don't have to have a race license to get one? Thanks for the help

I myself am waiting for the race ecm to come available from EBR. It's going to cost some coin though, I believe 7-800 bucks. They will become available after the 1st.

From what I've heard, the ecm's will be available to non-racers.

you can ask http://www.erikbuellracing.com there is a contact section somewhere there.

YES, the module is NOT APPROVED for highway use - and neither is the intake, exhaust which are not DOT or EPA approved. The rider makes a conscious choice to risk having their bike impounded for using an illegal intake, exhaust or control module.

Would this be any better then a directlink and custom map? Seems like this is the same thing but minus the custom dyno tune which can be had for under $600, including the $250 key.

Someone had some screen shots of the real race ECM software and it looked a lot nicer than other software interfaces. There is something to be said about getting the software from the device manufacturer.

That said getting the $250 Direct Link and using the stock ECM would be a lot cheaper and probably come up with a very similar running condition to the race ECM and custom tuning.

I'm not too worried about the muffler or ECM being illegal as my vehicles and other bike is a lot louder at this point and we only have visual inspections in NC anyways. So can I get the ECM spy even if it's not listed for an 09 and have a dealer dyno tune it using the stock ECM? Also will having them tune it void the warranty?

ECM spy will not really work at this time for the 08+ vehicles.

Al at American Sport Bike used to handle Direct Link - might still.

I don't know if you can get as much control as you can with the true race module - example, I don't think you can alter the limits - rev limit, temperature limits, fan, tip-over, etc.,

Also, I don't think the other systems will operate the ignition-interrupt for electronic shifting.

I've seen Direct Link in operation at Antelope Valley and frankly, for a modified street motor, it does seem to work well - although I'd only seen it being used to change the fuel tables and not all the spark or WOT or other parameters... but for a basic set of street mods, it appeared to be plenty good enough... but you gotta get to know your dyno operator OR have somebody who has a set of ignition and fuel tables they'd developed for the same configuration... or that $250 for a custom map is gonna start looking CHEAP.

Anyone know of any Buell dealers or dyno operators around the WNC area or upstate SC or Eastern Tennessee that might be good with the Direct Link and have the tables already? Also is the direct link a one time use only thing or can you use it on multiple bikes? Cause I'm trying to convince Buellblastrider to tune his too when he gets his drummer. And Jason when the warranty runs out and we turbo this thing I'd much rather have the F.I. lol

DL is sold bike-by-bike. That doesn't include a map.

IF you have a pretty standard setup, using pump gas, you can get a map for $250-ish on top of the software/ECM mod.

Warranty? Fuggedaboudit! Unless you're on good terms with a dealer who will work with you, you are expecting the dealer to not report an unauthorized engine mod... not saying that some dealers wouldn't report it in order to get warranty work - but it might not work for you.

Dang. So how much does it hurt to run the bike with just a special ops pipe without mapping the ecm? Also will it hurt it much to add an aftermarket air filter with the muffler or will it lean it out too much?

This works pretty good for the 08-09 Buell's.

Similar to a Power Commander. Actually, you can use Power Commander maps with it. Further, you can use a DynoJet Dyno to tune it.

This is the reply from Erik in regards to the new programmable ECM's that you can purchase in the next few weeks or so.

Much better than Twin Tec or Remus. I have tried both and would not use either one again.

We will be offering the race programmable ECM, however we are not initially going to offer maps other than the ones that are for certain race packages. There are many aftermarket combinations out there, and it will be difficult to make maps for them all. The ECM is fully programmable, however and will allow tuning for any combination. It would be best to have this done at a dyno tuning facility with experience.

As more units get out and after we get the fundamentals of the race business running we will hopefully have time to look at more maps, or to see if we can pass learning/mapping on from other customers with aftermarket parts. Drummers are a fairly common set up and I would imagine that would be one that would likely be addressed sooner than later.

Thank you very much for your interest, and best wishes for the New Year,

Erik

I am very interested to see what the race pipe will be like as well as the different race packages. I may have to buy more than one.
