I departed m home in Zillah WA 3 days ago.
I arrived in Mesa yesterday. This morning I got on the bike and headed for Tortilla Flats. I stopped by the Harley dealer first to get directions. I told him I wanted to take the dirt road from Tortilla Flats to Roosevelt dam. He said it was not doable on a bike. So I set out to see for myself. I found the road steep and narrow with lots of washboard. No guardrails most of the way with lots of places to fall to your death. It was perfect.

Blackdog,

What part of Mesa are you in?
And how was the road to Tortilla Flats?
... Last time I was out there, I caught a group of kids throwing dirt and rocks into the road at the corners!
Oh was I pissed... so how was the road?
I would like to go again but that road ISNT the best.

Merry Christmas to everyone!
~especially to all of you in AZ!

I'm in Apache Junction, Baseline and Signal Butt.

The roads were perfect. The paved part to Tortilla Flats is very twisty, some posted 15 MPH curves. Try it.

The XB12XT is the perfect bike for this type of riding. It does moderate trails and dirt and gravel roads very well. Than it cruises back home in total comfort.

The weather is crap right now, due to the cold front moving through. At least we don't get snow. : )
I would be up for a ride up South Mountain around lunch time on Thursday.

That road is cool isn't it! Made my wife sick (she was pregnant too) the first time we took it in a 4X4. I stop where the blacktop ends on my 12R though! More Power to ya!

Bart, PM me your number. I'm trying to cram a bunch of riding in before I leave. I was going to Mt Lemmon today but there's ice on the road this morning. Ron 509-969-4999

If the roads are clear, you really should try to do the Salt River Canyon before you go.
It's north of Globe. Number texted to you.

I drove that road in a rental car last spring when I was in Phoenix for the NRA convention. Came through from Globe and went all the way through to Apache Junction. Yeah, it's rough and slow goin' but quite passable. There were people towing boats with pick-ups on the road. I had lunch in Tortilla Flats. Awesome trip!

Bart. It looks like Salt river canyon is in cold country. I went to Orcal today and froze my ass off. It was 39 degrees in Globe. Heated gear could barley keep up.

Go and try the arizona road to the grand canyon thats about 90 miles from las vegas, its about 15 miles of extreme ruts and continous washboard. We did it on a brand new dodge neon that we completely trashed the suspension on and even there even 4 broken down suvs on this road. Not to bust your balls about this road you traveled on in AZ, but it looks pretty and you could drive it on a scooter, its simply a long dirt road.

Where is this road? I could take it on my way home next week.

I tried to find it on google maps, but it didn't turn up. You really need a road atlas and look at the las vegas area and look for a road that will take you to the closest edge of the grand canyon. I remember the road had a colonel or general name to it. I know we passed thru lake mead to get to it and then into arizona for about 1 hr. Basically your on a local high way headed north east and then you make a left off the highway down this shit hole dirt road past trailer parts and little farms, and after about 10 miles on this dirt road you will see a green sign on your right that marks the road to the grand canyon. Basically its about 30-45 minutes of 15mph driving on wash board roads and then you are suprized with a paved road for the last 3 miles to the edge of the canyon, to a rest stop with a shitter and a parking area.

Note there are no phones and gas stations in the area, once you leave nevada there are only 2 gas stations for 100 miles and they both charge $5 a gallon 10 yrs ago. So its probably $10 per gallon now.

1st gas station is an old grocery store something out of easy rider and the last gas station is a local bar and gas station, last chance for gas and water.

Going to the canyon it took 45 minutes taking it easy and on the way back it was getting late so my husband drove like the dukes of hazards and trashed the neon rental car, return down the canyon road was 20 minutes. Made it back to vegas rattling like crazy, covered in dust and 2 flat tires in the morning. A good mexican hand car wash and 2 tire plugs fixed it good enough for the rental company to not find anything

got it Hermit Rd, Grand Canyon National Park, AZ 86023. Its called hermits rest overlook. Its the first right off route 40 west, just passed flag staff. They may have upgraded the road in the last 10 yrs., but I really doubt it. Try to get to it by 12pm- 1pm you will need time and day light if you have any break downs. Also get a tire plug kit, what did in the neons tires were sharp arrow head like rocks that punctured the tires
