Ok, so I noticed on my 04 frame that the scoop actually provides a function by bringing air through the frame and into the airbox. On my 06, that part in the frame has been welded. Is the scoop just an aesthetic thing and the new airbox on the 06 takes in the air? Doesn't seem like enough to me. I bought the bike with a salvage title and want to make sure that the person who repaired it didn't put these there post repair. Thanks! | ||

its factory. honestly, the frame opening on our earlier bikes are counter productive anyway. a low pressure area would be created as air rushes past the frame opening. the only way it could actually be useful is if the scoop actually scooped the air up through the opening. 06 and newer and they blocked off the opening for more fuel capacity and they take in air from around the fuel filler. | ||

That scoop should provide some small amount of pressurized air to the motor, but it may only do it above 100 mph. It doesn't seem to be in an ideal spot for a ram air induction scheme. On the dyno it is nothing more than an impediment to performance, but then a dyno doesn't normally blow 100 mph wind over the front of the bike either. I would hesitate to remove it until you were able to check airbox pressures at many different speeds to see if it is doing any good anywhere. Since the newer frames have removed this, I assume the benefits to a street rider are minimal and the extra fuel is nicer. | ||

I dunno...there's nothing to "scoop" the air up in through the frame. Basic physics would indicate that unless that happens there would actually be a vacuum created! The shape of the scoop could very well direct some air up there, I honestly don't know. I'm just speaking in principles here I guess. A simply scoop attached the the bottom of the frame opening to direct air up would do wonders... | ||

You do not want to remove the scoop. Part of the air is directed into the airbox. Part of the air is also directed to the rear cylinder for cooling. This applies whether or not the frame hole is blocked [as in later models]. | ||

When I look into the left scoop on my 03 9r I see a partition that directs air into the snorkel, how well it does this job is in question though since it was dropped in later years. Based on data from other motorcycles with ram air induction, it is probably not doing much of anything until above 100mph. It's just a guess, but most of those other cycles don't really make any pressure until around that speed. If I was to build a race only bike, I would take the headlights out and build a nice air intake. Plumb that intake from the left side front fairing to the hole in the frame and seal it to the airbox. To do the job 100% correctly you would need to add a real vacuum port to the throttle body down stream of the butterfly and would need a computer that can take that measurement into consideration. Even if all you get is no vacuum at wide open throttle it would be an improvement, but I would expect you could get some pressure increase just like all the other bikes get. Again, look at the XBRR, only difference is that they didn't use a hole in the frame to get the air to the airbox. | ||
