Once upon a time a Sportster WAS the "sportbike".

Other bike manufacturers were gunning for it.

Somewhere along the line, Harley Davidson was hit in the soft spot with a hammer and failed to continue development.

I think that hammer blow came in 2001. That was about the time that the VRSC was being finalized and when HD pulled out of Superbike.

Killing off Buell, selling off MV, and pulling flat track support were simply the tying up of loose ends.

"Concentrating on the core customer" is code speak for continue to build the "classic" bikes and not work on anything new.

The XR1200 is an unmitigated failure from a sales and marketing standpoint.

Tanx for all your advices Ft bstrd....really appreciate.... as for taking up a different route for my build...I have done that several times...
The reasons you mentioned about Harleys are the same for not building a 'fighter out of sportster...I could have built a jap thing out of much less dosh and get super performance...but I always craved for American iron...v twins and particularly Buells...
You will get the build pics when the works commence...

Ian,
What constraints are forcing you to use the carb?
Have you looked into the possibility of using the stock Buell fuel injection?
With ECMspy you could make the stock FI perform way better than any carb set-up. Plus ECMSpy is free, and though a little harder to get it's not rare. There are lots of people with personal copies that can send it to you.

I know the overhead/downdraft design makes it a challenge to use but if you're building a one-off custom you can incorporate it into the design.
You could probably modify an tube frame x1 or S3 FI intake to use the XB throttle body and injectors.
They might even already be compatible.

I know we are supposed to be talking about a streetfighter here, and choppers aren't my thing, but here are a few pictures of a Buell chopper that I saw at Rockerbox in Milwaukee this past summer:

Again, not my cup of tea, but none the less cool. Whoever put this together did a fantastic job IMO.

Ironmaiden - Sounds like a guy here. Mid-eighties Ford station wagon on a 75 Bronco frame with a 351 Windsor, huge lift, and like 37in tires. The thing is ridiculously stupid. Oh, and it's got a rattle-can camo paint job.

Aw come on guys....big ol' crazy 4 x 4s Rock!!! If you don't think so, you simply have never been in one chewing thru 4 foot deep mud...it's wild, loud and dirty and more fun than a carnival ride. Ya'll ought to try it...

Ha, the station wagon here is painted a money colored green with 100$ bills painted onto it, and its still got the wood panels on it. And one of those stupid whistle tip things, sounds worse than fingernails on a chalkboard.

Fast, I wasn't hating on 4x4s, I tear it up in my dads Silverado all the time until I broke a tie rod wrestling it over the 4 foot drift of snow the lovely road crews plowed my drive way shut with. Makes a nice jump for the KTM 250exc : D

Whistle go SUCK MY D. Next time I see that chump he's gonna find some BB's in his tire valve caps. Leaves the tire intact where as a knife wouldn't. I love loud exhausts, but when they whistle...Well I'll just say I wished they made pocket size tire spike strips, even more so when it's a jacked up station wagon of all things.

Talk about jerry rigging cars, my neighbor just stuck a couple Yoshimura cans from his rice grinding CBR600 on his Civic. Now he sounds like his cars got serious gas, more so than actual 'fart cans' people put on their metrics.

you guys think that is loud my husband put a 1 1/2" tin can chopper baffle on his 1985 chevy caprice, as a replacement muffler for his winter junker. It had a V8 and was very quiet, but it sounded like a 3000lb vacuum cleaner. It only cost him $10 to hook it up

Go to youtube and search for a quad-turbo Busa, if you wanna hear some major whine. Or search a bike that has those Tailgunner exhausts that spin like an actual minigun, those whine too.
