I have a 2010 XB12Ss and am getting a 2010 XB9City. I am wondering if this year bikes can have modifications via the ECM or are they not able to? If not able, what is the last year that can be modified? If not ECM mods, can I still do exhaust, air filters, etc. Also is there any difference between the 2005 XB9 and the 2010 XB9? A friend has a 2005 XB9 for sale and I am curious about it compared to the new model. I read somewhere that the trans. was different on the new ones. Any handling, chassis, brakes differences? I am relatively new to the Buell bikes so I don't mean to sound stupid, but just unfamiliar at this time. Thanks very much.

Due to the rarity of the 2010's, I do not know of any compatible tuning software yet.

The older the bike, the better the tuning support. 2008+ models are limited at the moment.

Personally I wouldn't. That is part of the reason my 08 and 09 are still stock, plus they just run great, no need to screw around with them.

Yes. The 2010 has Different trans, better belts, more fuel capacity, stronger swingarm, newer fuel injection system, less maintenance, better tires, different air intake system, most of the motor was improved, better oiling system, larger right side scoop and different fan operation programming, just to name a few of the many changes : )

Ok, who told you my original orders? Got bumped on the SS but have my cityx waiting on me. You buy from Ratbuell too?

I'd say great minds think alike but I know I'm just nuts. lol

Froggy, I knew there were a couple obvious changes but wow with that list.

There was also many cosmetic changes too, which I didn't go into. Also tons of more minor changes like different turn signals, different headlamp assembly, clutch cable retainer, and a hundred more little things I can point out just by looking at the numbers in the parts book : )

Are any of the improvements made to the 2010 able to be put on an 09? I love the right sided air scoop, but I dont think there are mounting points on an 09? I'm probably wrong but it'd save 40 quid on an aftermarket glass-fibre scoop, and an unmentionable ammount if one were to purchase a carbon fibre right scoop.

For 2010 the biggest changes were the new rear wheel with 3 bearing setup, and the right side scoop. Both will retrofit onto older models. There is over a dozen threads about the new scoops on here, complete with pictures and part numbers. : )

2010 Uly's got a black frame, while the 09's was grey. The 2010 Ulys got a different right side scoop than the XB's, but also got the 3 bearing wheel.

Thanks for the responses guys. I really wanted the 05 but the prices for new are so low right now that it is hard to justify used. I have a feeling the prices will go back up after all the new ones are bought up.

Hey Oddball, when you say you got bumped, does that mean you're not getting your Ss? I bought mine from Lancaster Harley in Pa. Real good people over there! My Ss is Kick Ash and the City is Cherry Bomb Red. I've never had a Buell before, but have always wanted one. Looking forward to spring for some good riding! It snowed here today maybe an inch, 3 inches in Lancaster tonight.

So Froggy, is the handling on an 05 and a 10 City essentially the same? Since the newer swingarms are stronger does that mean there were flexing or breaking problems with the older ones? I saw someone mention a race ECU, is that the same as the ECM? Probably a really stupid question but oh well! Thanks!

It is pretty amazing that all of those changes and enhancements were designed, tested, tooled, and put into manufacturing production from one model year to another considering the small number of people that staffed Buell Motorcycles. No dead wood there.

I used to work for the Government, that lasted about 6 months, and they replaced me with a guy that doesn't get his work done. Remind me to tell you about it sometime : )

Jwey, yes the suspensions are the same on 05 and 10, difference being the color on the 2010 is black. So given both bikes were running the same tires, pressures, suspensions settings, etc, you would have identical handling bikes. : )

I have only heard of two cases of a swingarm breaking, and both of them were on 2006 Uly's (one was mine), which use a totally different swingarm than the XB9's.


I do not know of anyone destroying the standard XB swingarm.

ECU = Engine Control Unit. ECM = Engine Control unit. Ketchup/Catup. Soda/Pop. : )

It is hard to believe that these amazing bikes were built by a company of less than 200 people. We need more people like Erik Buell in this world.

Froggy aren't the front tubes different from the 07/08 and up I am not sure but I thought the adjustments were different in the front end they look different or maybe I was looking at an R model I don't remember

Nope, here are the fork tubes for each XB/1125 model

41mm - 03-04 All XB models. All year SCG/SL

43mm - 05-10 XB-R,S,SX,SS,STT,XT. 06-07 X.

47mm - 08-10 X, 1125R, 1125CR.

Jwey, yes i'm not getting the SS. As I understand it the 2010 order was kicked/bumped/canceled (however one wants to term it, the supply was taken I guess) and he could have gotten an 09 for me instead while there was a supply. Once I had my sights on a '10 the 09's wouldn't do. It was believed it was to be a kick ash as well. The city x is cherry bomb like you. This is really a Twilight Zone feeling.

It's working out for the best I think. I'm probably going to buy another bike from Ratbuell that I'm interested in.

No they appear to be different as the newer ones 09 I guess and above are A blacked out and B the preload adjuster and rebound adjuster looks different they may be interchangable but they appear different I wonder what I am looking at ok they are not all blacked out but here is what I mean

They look different because that first picture is an XB9S, and the second one is an Ulysses. : )

The xb ss I saw had the same set up as the Uly for adjusters and the #1 photo is the same as my 06 set up now I have to get a an hd dealer or if someone has an 09 XB 12/9 can you please post a pick of your adjustment setup or copy the photo above it's driving me nuts

Froggy the lower pic or #2 is for 09 all the XB models the 08 has the 2 systems listed and pics of both the set ups for the ss were photo 1 the stt are #2 which I am assuming is the same as a ULY but the 09 is only the second pic showing and I know I saw the #2 photo on a xb12ss blacked out at Bergan H-d in hero blue

I think '06/'07 (and earlier, but for Uly's sake it started in '06) had the "count the lines" front preload adjuster (brumbear's top pic), and '08-up changed to the "turns from minimum" adjuster with the blue nut on top (brumbear's bottom pic).

Now I wonder if you can mix them if you had to. If not might be a good idea to make a note of it in case you are fleebaying a tube. You can be mindful of the year.

My adjuster had a red nut, not blue, and its an 09. Did different models have different colors of adjustment nuts?

The adjuster may be different (haven't dug into it yet), but the springs inside are still the same as far as I can tell.

5thgear, I have seen the adjuster nubbins, I have been meaning to pickup a set, I forget which sponsor sells them, Trojan I believe.

Brumbs, didn't you get the memo? The 09 SS was mixed with the STT. It has the STT suspension, and SS plastics. : )

I know the wheelbase is 2" longer on the Ss, but when I sit on both bikes I cannot really notice the difference between the 2. My knees seem to hit the frame under the airbox at the same spot. Where is the extra length? I would measure but my City is not here yet; in storage until I get a place in my shop for it. Thanks.
