VDO gauges makes a head temp gauge for air cooled engines . You can get them from Jegs for 75.99. line goes under your spark plug . we are using them for racing but its nice to know exactly what that rear cylinder is up to.... jegs part #310901

Cool part. Thanks for posting. Just curious, but what kind of temps are you seeing for the front and rear cylinder (if you are racing a Buell)?

I might have to pick one up.

Do you have any pics of it installed?

"Direct link to the part being discussed:"

lol, I mis-read that as saying that there was a discussion about the part at the link. I looked for a while to no avail. : p

What is the sensor like?

Y'know, some of those high-dollar RC cars use little $20 digital temp gauges. They use a little wire loop that fits around the head somewhere. I wonder if you could wrap that cord around the spark plug and use the RC gauge instead...? That would be a heckuva lot cheaper, though probably not waterproof.

RC car ones are waterproof if you get the boat ones. but the wirers for it would be way to short and exstending they would mess with the temp reading. i got a RC thermo temp i carry with my bike it works great for a quick check on the header pipe. to see temp drops.

I have one of those laser pointer thermometers. Just point and shoot. I even use it to find hot and cold spots in the house.

What would be a "normal" temp for the rear cylinder head (temp range?)? At what cyl head temps should one bee concerned?

I'm thinking about 120(C) is getting toward the upper limit of what you should run with before the oil starts losing lube capacity... slightly higher with synthetics.

I use 120 when on the dyno for an upper limit when heat-cycling.

This intrigues me... and the fact that I could just drive 5 minutes to Jegs and pick it up is nice too... But I'd much rather have oil temperature than rear head temp. Anybody heard of an adapter for an oil temperature sender that would work on our bikes?

Something like this, a standard drain plug bolt, drilled and threaded for a universal oil temp sender:

Anyone know our drain plug bolt thread size/pitch?

Mike, Dark Horse Moto makes a dipstick with a thermometer in it. Obviously its not easy to read while riding, but it beats fussing around with modified drain plugs : )

Well, the only show that's on this weekend is in TO. No mention of EBR but then things have been moving quickly. Hmm, it's about 2 hours away and I'm free.
