Hey all. So I'm sure this has been asked before but the search engine leaves something to be desired. My fan comes on all the time. I'm talking about just started the bike, riding around in the low 40's (temp, not speed), and my fan is running like I'm in the sahara. Is this normal? 2010 Lightning Long. | ||

if it runs on a cold engine startup, no thats not normal. maybe a temp. sensor issue. i'd get it looked at re; warranty issue. | ||

The 2010 models shouldn't be running much compared to older models. The programming makes it so it will mostly be on once you get moving, but stopped it would rarely come on. | ||

I had the latest flash done on my 2008 XB12X after I installed the Comfort Kit. The fan runs all the time when moving, regardless of temperature. My son and I split the cost of a new 2009 XB12Ss and when we picked it up, we asked for the latest reflash. It's fan operates the same as the Uly, except that, since it's so new, it sometimes runs after shutdown, but just for minute or two. Maybe the 2010 XB's all have the same ECM flash stock? Or the dealer reflashed it? | ||

The fan shuts off below 15 MPH... every time. I guess the idea is so you don't have to listen to it if you're stuck in traffic, etc. (they said this was done to take care of the biggest whine, which was in the seat, ha) This of course is the opposite of my other bike, when the fan only really comes on if you're stuck idling. If I listen to Ted, I should bring it back. If I listen to Froggy, it's perfectly normal. Do I get one more vote from someone, preferably who owns a 2010 XB12Ss? (Did I get lucky by the way? I read on other posts about people saying how rare it's been to get one...) | ||

My post count is higher than Ted's, plus he is from that Canada place, so that makes his post invalid  There was several changes in 2010 to allow the different fan programming, including the right side scoop and a beefed up fuel pump to handle the higher temperatures.  | ||

the fan comes on when you go over 15 mph, regardless (now if you take it to -xxF, i dont if it will shut off if it is just way to cold) That is something new on the 2010's. I found it very weird but that is what they do. | ||

The ECM still monitors the temperature, so if you are just sitting around in traffic, and you are getting too hot, it will still kick in the fan. Difference now is that has to get hotter for it to happen, and from what I understand, you pretty much got to be in Arizona on a hot day in a black box while doing a burnout and using a plug in engine heater. Or something like that | ||

+1 to what Froggy said. The 2010 fan program is the bees knees. THe bike runs so much cooler now. My only complaint is not having the heat to keep me warm during cold weather riding. | ||

Holy old thread, Batman! This is actually relevant to a current concern of mine. I, too, have the 2010 XB12Ss. I just got a new ECM installed and flashed at the dealer (stock settings; I haven't modded my bike other than luggage), and my fan now behaves differently. Just like with my old ECM, the fan is on above 15mph provided the engine is warmed up. Just like with my old ECM, the fan will run at zero mph if I let the bike warm up all the way before riding off. Just like with my old ECM, the fan will run at zero mph if I've just come to a stop after an extended high-speed blast, and just like with my old ECM, the fan runs at zero mph if the bike has genuinely overheated. UNLIKE with the old ECM, the fan will now sometimes run after I turn the engine off. It never did that before in the five years/39K miles I've had it - not once! Also, the bike now settles to a 1K idle on startup and does not like to be ridden until it's warmed up, whereas the cold start high idle on the previous ECM kept the revs up while the bike warmed up. It used to be much easier to just ride away. Now I either have to wait or use revs and a bit of clutch to keep the engine from stumbling when cold. Any of you 2010ers care to weigh in on how your fans behave, and how your bikes idle when you first start the engine? |
