I have two questions. 1. Are the firebolt updated lights any better than the original 2003-2006 lights as far as light output? 2. Can you polish out the old firebolt lens to make it smooth again and if so what do you used to do it?

Yes and no. Yes, the newer ones are brighter. No as far as polishing. The chrome paint breaks down into a fine dust. One wipe and its gone.

OK, how do I tell if the bike I bought has had the lights fixed or not? It's an 03 9R and I know nothing about it's history.

+1 random. Yes and No.

The recalled lights (forgive me, that's probably not the right term) are properly designed and manufactured to be the long lasting, high output projector beam headlights that should have been installed as original equipment in the first place.

Don't even think of trying to fix your dim bulb headlights yourself. Take the bike to the dealer and have them replace your headlights pronto at no charge!

I was looking at the recall bulletin that states that any bike shipped before September of 2005 is recalled. My bike is stamped May of 06. I noticed that my headlights do not have the little round pattern(other than the melted round pattern) on the lens. Is there something different about my headlights than the pre-september 2005 headlights?

I am a brand new 2003 XB owner. Bike has low miles and I am not too sure on the history of it. The notice for the headlights, does anyone have a copy of it? Am I entitled to the free headlight upgrade if my bike qualifies, and how do I know if I need it? Sorry for the questions, new guy here.

When you register on Buell.com there's a place to check your warranty updates by entering your VIN. When the shop has done the work, it shows up on your record.

iirc, you register on Buell, then go to HD with the same login and the warranty info is there.

I think you can also look up the info and print out the PDF for the recall. I would just take that in with your bike and say fix it!

I'm still enjoying the "PRD:0501" program headlights on my '0512r.They've not degraded at all.
I've still got the notice from BMC which i'll look for today

Where on the Buell site do I enter my VIN to find recall status? I just looked around and also made a profile, but still can not find this info.

Two steps:

1. Buell profile

2. HD > Owners > Service check up. (Login should be there from Buell, if not, it uses the same info)

http://www.harley-davidson.com/wcm/Content/Pages/O wners/service_checkup.jsp?locale=en_US&bmLocale=en _US

Now, it showed outstanding warranty before but it's not showing that now. My headlights aren't done unless the shop has done them in the last weeks.

Give it a try.

It doesn't show any recalls listed, but still not sure if it has been done. And I'm only somewhat interested because I'm seriously thinking of buying some used FX-R type BiXenon housings and doing a proper a HID upgrade. 2 lights, all the time, with highbeam servo. There are lots of kits on ebay, but the FX-R are one of the few that look like they are somewhat enclosed and weather resistant aside from the Hella 90mm units that are $500+ each. The FX-R upgrade would be at least $250 when it is all said and done, if it will fit in the mounts.

OK, when I hit search again, now it shows up as needing the recall done. I wonder if they would let me keep the "defective" lights to use as an HID hulk housing??? I'll have to call them and see what they say.

Hella 90MMs are $500+ each? Huh?

Even the bi-zenon(which you REALLY don't need) are $233

Otherwise, the standard 90MM Hellas are $60 each.

If you want a TON of light, just add a HID conversion kit to the low beam. Seriously, the Hellas with halogen bulbs that come WITH the units put out MORE light than a Firebolt stock/new with HIDs.

Sorry, $625 and I bet it doesn't include the servo/solenoid.

The halogen modules are probably great, but I'd rather have both lights operating at all times because I like the way it looks.

If this was a bit cheaper, it would be nice too:

That and a decent H7 HID conversion would put out serious light at half the price of the BiXenon module.

Greg,

If you are looking for some pre-recall housings to play with, I have a pair in good shape to play with just down the road.

Minor thread resurrection, but I was trolling around so here's some more 'nollij:

You can tell the factory upgraded headlights by presence of the "fresnel lens" pattern on the lenses.

The Hella 90mm conversion is awesome, but a lot of work. The low beam alone is better than both stockers. You have to fab up a bracket and enlarge the fairing holes. Then they're a little tough to adjust, 'cuz you have to pull the fairing to adjust 'em. But, oh the light output! Good enough that once I got caught out after dark, in a rainstorm, with my dark smoke shield, and could still see well enough.

Dave at Rallylights has a set of 60mm projector lights with metal reflectors that were developed for this exact application. He says they are a drop-in, but check the bolt circle on the print.

I imagine these plus HID would rock! -Nadz

I like that asymmetrical look of the Hella 90mm setup. Makes it look tough, like it has one crazy dilated pupil!
