Just had my headlight recall done today on my '03 9R. The lights are definitely bright, what a difference. On my orig set the low would stay on when I turned on my HI beam. Now when I turn on my HI my LO shuts off leaving a large shadow in front of the bike before the light hits the ground. Is this normal? The only time both lights stay on is when is use the flash button. Is there a season and is it possible to go back to my old 2 light on at the same time when I turn on the HI?

There is a post up in the knowledge base about the modification. Yes what you have now is normal, what you had before was modified.

I had the headlight recall done about a year ago on my 03 XB9R. When I turn on my high beam both lights stay on, I just went to the garage to make sure.
Greg e must be referring to the "S" models, they only use either the high or low, but can be modified to run both at the same time.

The recall replacement lights are brighter, I think the light pattern is poor. Even with both high and low operating there is a "hole" in the lighting that is about 7 to 10 feet in front of the bike.

So from what I have gathered so far, the dealership may have installed the kit incorrectly? On the R both lights should be on when switched to HI beams. Can I just do the knowledge vault headlight mod to my R just as one would an S that Greg_e spoke of, or is something different within the wiring.

On an R both of your headlights should stay on.

On a Lightning the low beam shuts off when turning on the high beam.

Somethings wrong, bring it back.

Sorry, didn't know the mod was just for the S model.

My 03 9r has the recall done and it was the reflective foil that had been recalled, making the bulb more "effective". It was cheaper to replace the entire assembly with the newly imrpoved reflective material than just replacing the material within the original assembly. May be useless info, but just thought you should know.

As said earlier- both my headlights stay on and there is still an "hourglass" shape of no light about 10ft infront of my bike (when my highbeams are on). Gonna go with a HID upgrade.

The mod is not for the S model. It is for the R. Also, when you turn your hi beams on, BOTH should be on with an R. Bring it back.

Ok, So I called the HD shop back and told them what was going on. They in turn told me that when I brought the bike in the low beam was'nt even functioning, that there was a wiring issue (not a bad bulb), and they didm't know they were both supposed to stay on because most of their Hd's shut off the lo when you switch to hi. This was unknown to me due to me only have been riding infrequently and during the day for the last two months. They did not inform me of this during the service nor after. The guy in service just told the mech to make it work. I have a feeling maybe he set it up like the S. Shouldn't the dealership mechanics and repair know how the lights are supposed to function? Either way they said to bring it back next week and they would try and figure it out. They said I have to leave it over night because they have "no clue" what the problem is and it could take a large un-estimatable amount of time. So, will this service fall under the re-call work or will I be paying out of pocket, should have asked at the time, but what do you all think?

Quick, off the top of my head tell me what happens when you turn on the high beam on a 1991 RS1200.

Well when you are working on hundreds of different bikes, its not possible to remember every little detail of every little thing.

As for the charge, you would need to call and see. If the issue is unrelated to the recall, like you had a wiring issue, you might end up paying.
