I just got my new to me 2006 firebolt xb12r tonight. I test rode it a few nights ago and everything seemed fine. The bike looks to have been well care for and it has all the receipts of work performed. It has 12,900 miles on it and was taking to the dealership to have the 10,000 mile service done to it just a few months ago. Tonight after getting it home and pushing it around in the garage, the belt is making alot of noise as if the belt tensioner is to tight. Of course while riding you can't hear the belt but pushing it in the garage it is quite noisy. It is definitely the belt because i can feel the belt vibrate slightly as it squeaks while being rolled. To my knowledge there is no adjustment for the tensioner so I have no idea what could possibly be going on. Any help from you guys would be greatly appreciated

Have you gone around the belt to make sure it's not rubbing on anything like the belt guards or pulley cover?

Yeah, remove belt-pulley cover @ transmission & look in there.
Sound/feel same whether moving forward or backward?

You can pull the belt and check the bearings... on the wheel and the tensioner.

If those are fine, with the belt off and the bike in neutral, turn the transmission output sprocket. If that's crunchy, well, you don't want to know... but that would be pretty unusual on an XB.

Anyone near you that you could compare belt tension with?

Has the belt been replaced? It may just need to 'break-in'.

You could try removing the tensioner, and then roll it back and forth to see if the sound is still there...that would tell you if it is tension related at least....

I wonder if they got some kind of cleaning product on the belt. They are normally quite tight. That idler pulley is not flat, it has a domed surface that causes a bit of rubbing as the flat side of the belt passes over it. Try putting some water on it(the belt where it passes over the pulley), then push it back and forth like you did.

If that helps it, is likely a cleaner product making the rubber raw/sticky, that will wear off.

Some days mine is noisy. Some days it's dead quiet.

Haven't really figured out what makes the difference. It makes more noise going backwards when it makes noise, but it's not always noisy.

I wouldn't worry about it. Give the belt a visual. If it's okay, go riding.

Some of them do that, some more than others. I'm not sure if it indicates a problem or not. My girlfriend's XB9S does some days, typically only in reverse. Annoying, but whatever.

Go ride.

I've had mine squeak that loud until I've had maybe 200 miles on it after a replacement...

I would imagine if it's pristine clean and cold it may get a little louder too.

Rules for the belt...

DO NOT twist it.

DO NOT bend it backwards.

DO NOT roll it on with the rear axle in place. You MUST loosen the rear axle until there's slack. You'll do damage to the belt and possibly the swing arm.

Mine always squeeks and never knew what it was until I was backing it up into the garage which is when it usually squeeks and used the brake and the squeeking stopped. Appearently it's my front rotor being slightly warped so it rubs against the pads. Is this bad? Im new to Buells so I have no experience with the ZTL2 brakes.
