Dude, you need a shop manual.

Without it you will likely have a broken belt soon. That is exactly how I learned what I'm trying to tell you.

+1 to get a manual.

Long story short, jack up the bike (muffler is fine), remove the pinch bolts on the swingarm, rotate the wheel backwards a bit, use the axle tool in your toolkit and a socket to remove the axle, remove belt and your pretty much done.

Can't remember now, but aren't the jack points stamped on the muffler and are where the straps are? The rest of the muffler probably isn't reinforced for the load.

Yup. You should see the arrows on the can. As long as you stay in line with them, your good...

Panhead_dan, out of curiosity.... what would cause the belt to break?

Improper handling and installation can damage the belt, but the newer belts are less susceptible.

Yup, get a shop manual.

I've never removed the tensioner, I can't ever see the need for that, but to each their own!

Anything in particular? Not trying to be a_dick, just picking some brains. I've made many tire changes and 1500 miles after the last one, the belt broke (at nearly 20,000 mi). So just checking to make sure my double checks are checked.... ya know?

The book has pretty pictures, but basically twisting it, coiling it, and pretty much anything that isn't normal.

Not that it can't be done without adverse affects.

But the XB isn't normal, so don't 2 wrongs make a right? And yes, there's pretty pictures in my book too.

IRRC my 9R w/o belt guards

loosen pinch bolt
loosen axle a turn
lift swing arm (stand or jack @ muffle points)
remove axle
slide belt off
pull out wheel.

TUR-DAH!

Don't forget the rubber mallet! Sometimes the axle wants to stick the the swingarms, and as you unscrew it it tries to spread them apart. Couple of whacks with a rubber mallet will help free it up.
