I've seen mixed reviews on quality between different sources. Anyone care to point me in the right direction? 2004 XB Lightning, FWIW

Yea, only do carbon if you care getting it from American Sport Bike or Trojan. The Ebay junk is worthless.

What about Airtech? I know they list pieces for the XB*R and list them in both fiberglass and carbon but I don't know what it looks like.

The bestem cf is not as good as American Sport Bike or Buell stuff but much better than the Chinese ebay stuff.

what's the point in carbon fiber if you're painting it?
the weight savings for carbon vs plastic must be measured in ounces, not pounds

American Sport Bike and Buell graphite parts are made out of high quality ("Aerospace grade") pre-impregnated material which is vacuum-bagged into the molds and then oven or autoclave-cured.

I THINK the fiberglass parts sold by Buell are hand-laid, open-mold type piece. Heavier but about 1/3 the cost.

Virtually ALL others are hand-laid into open molds using bucket-and-brush methods.

ASK the people selling/making the stuff if they are hand lay-up or if they use "pre-preg" materials. That'll tell a story.

Some - such as Airtech, Sharkskinz, Catalyst - are hand laid-up and are high quality as far as that goes but you just CANNOT get the light weight, high quality that you can with the pre-preg built stuff.

I do believe that Trojan sells both types.

The hand-laid-up are going to be significantly heavier and if they're built using a non-woven mat instead of woven fabric, they're going to be very fragile.

I guess there's a zillion ways to go on all this.

I never got down with the whole CF thing, but I can say that the fibreglass XBR stuff from Airtech is high quality and low weight. There is also carbon-kevlar bodywork made by Sebimoto that is super duper tough stuff. You just can't kill it. From what I've seen Al at American Sport Bike sells tip top quality CF and he's a sponsor here.

I had all CF pieces and they were the centerpiece of my bike. I got many many comments on how good the CF looked. I had the Buell fender and chin spoiler with American Sport Bike fly screen and airbox cover. The two brands looked identical, very high quality, both brands.

I am selling a Buell CF chin spoiler and American Sport Bike CF fly screen if you're interested. PM me.
