Trying to find out the correct routing of the clutch and throttle cables. It's driving me nuts. I've got a couple of pics of other bikes, but the pics don't really show the routing very well. Do i need longer cables. American Sport Bike said I shouldn't. What gives? I've got the bike torn apart trying to get this figured out.

Looks like I'll need to order longer clutch and throttle cables. I think the Lightning cables should work as the bars are very similar to the Superbike kit. I wish American Sport Bike had told me this when I asked them about cables. Now my bike is down and I have to wait for longer cables.

Help us out with some details of what you are actually doing. What bars? (link maybe?) What bike? (the 12R listed in your profile?)

I'm sure you can find someone here that has done the same mod if you give us more info...

The kit is sold through American Sport Bike and is from LSL. This is indeed on my '05 XB12R. I got a response from Al at American Sport Bike saying the Lightning throttle cables will work. I'll have to assume the clutch cable for a lightning is what I need also.

If you have the LSL bar conversion and the correct LSL bars then you should be able to use the stock Firebolt clutch and throttle cables. The kit should include a longer brake line for the front brake though.

If you are having trouble making the cables reach, loosen the cable clamp that holds all the cables in place next to the headstock and pull the cables through to give you more room to play with.


You should fit the controls to the bars BEFORE you do up the handlebar clamps so you have some room to maneovre when fitting the throttle and clutch controls.

If the cables still don't fit then you may have the wrong handlebars for this kit. The ones you should have are the LSL Superbike 01 bars.

I have the all the cables loose from the headstock. I have tried routing the throttle cables below the neck and they come close, but are tight when turning the bars right. I have tried different routing of the clutch cable with no luck at all. Do I need to route it completely on the left hand side? I just dont see how these cables made for clips ons can be made to fit a bar that is higher? The bars are the correct ones for the kit. Thanks for your help.

I have a couple of pics here hope it helps.

The cable shoots straight down by the outside of the left tube, and then under the front isolator bolt area and above the throttle cables, I have just one clamp on the clutch cable next to the header............the one clamp I use holds the cable firmly in place , mind the clearance near the header.....Works good for me....

Thanks Xenox. Does the clutch cable go under the neck and back over to the original mounting bracket on the motor cross brace? Can you explain the route the throttle cables take? Do they also go under the neck. I took that route with the throttle and it makes it but still feels tight when turning? Thanks for the pics!

Also, what kind of bar ends and mirrors are you using? I like them.

Before I continue , Matt from Trojan who responded earlier is a truly outstanding sponsor,contributor,Buellphile.IMO the go to man for the best upgrades, and he has some awesome bikes ..What he says is correct no doubt. If my advise fails to work there may just be be a bar issue..


That said I didn't have instructions for my LSL super conversion, and my cables are free cabling,kind of like free balling : p, yet there is absolutely no binding, catching, or anything not working properly,I have proper lock to lock movement, no abnormal wear , nothing out of the ordinary.

The bolt/clamp on the motor mount I no longer use,all that remains is a threaded hole...I use a tube clamp on the lower tie bar on the right side (please properly remove/retorque this bolt, I heard of someone who had an issue with this and actually broke the boss!!!) , the clamp I use is plastic coated , same idea as the front brake line clamp on the lower triple on the fork, or brake line clamp on the swing arm. Situate it so the clutch cable is opposite the bolt head from the header. The clamp should just be tight enough around the cable to keep the cable from sliding/moving and that's it.

The throttle cables are completely mounted behind the fork assembly and they just touch the head of the isolator bushing bolt.

Ok that's how I had my throttle cables, and like i said before they did reach, i just didn't feel comfortable with how they routed underneath. I thought about routing the clutch that way (left of the forks and then down towards the primary, but i was afraid the bend in the cable was to sharp near the lever. plus there is a metal piece wrapping around the cable that looks like it keeps it from bending to sharply. Wasnt sure if I should remove it. I spoke to Al at American Sport Bike and i ended up ordering longer cables from a Lightning today. if I can keep the factory routing paths with these cables I'll be happy, if it's still not right I'll try what you did. Thanks for your help. i'll post some pics this weekend when I get it done. (fingers crossed)

FWIW I removed that metal piece by the cable , I thought it was causing the cable to be bent too sharply, without it it seems more relaxed. I too was going to replace the cables , but I felt pretty commfy with the way I had them routed and how smoothly they worked.

Of course having the proper length cables is the absolute best option .

I'm anxious to get this back together. The body positioning feels really good now. Thanks for your help Xenox. What was your experience going from the clip ons to this setup? I would imagine the front wants to come up easier. What about the wind?

Very good comfort and a really nice riding position now. I went to a taller windscreen from Al. I'm 6ft and don't really notice the wind much, but with the shorter screen I did. I'm still in the wind stream...It's just not that noticeable anymore.. I also went with the lower version Lightning pegs.

It can be thrown around much easier now.I find myself leaning forward on some accelerations to keep the front down . I'm going to try to hook up a custom gel seat for the final ergo tweak : p.
