I don't believe you can.

Why'd you run off from the SCAB meeting? I really think you messed something up with your ECM mod.. The 28mpg figure you mentioned to me in the parking lot is not right. If you added enough fuel to make the frame cool its going to be way too rich.

you can't adjust the static timing,
as it reads the notches on the crank shaft.
with the sensor in front ( left ) on the engine casing, so iff it's wrong, the crank is warped or the casing broken.
but why would you want to change the static timing ?

you can adjust it electronicly, but that is a whole different game ( need the right software tools and dyno to measure and adjust the fuel / spark mapping )

Correct, the 08+ models have a crank sensor for timing now instead of the old cam sensor so there is no static timing adjustment.

What is the ECM mod?

I wasn't aware that the 08+ bikes could be mapped yet so I'm curious.

You really can't rotate the sensor on the newer machines? Man that is strange. That means that each bike would have to be precise when they are building them.

I modified fuel map and changed map structure by ECMSPY.(EEPROM data change)

I modified timing by EEPROM too but i need adjust origin points.

You need ECM Spy and you have to drill the 2 rivets on the right side circle cover of the engine.

I've heard it's often off from the factory.

Go to ECM spy tuning guide and it's check static timing.
But note the 0 and 5 on the diag page are backwards when checking it.

there is no circle cover on right side. Maybe different from 09?

Rah's post only applies to the 07 and older bikes. They use a totally different injection and timing system than the 08+ bikes.

On the earlier bikes the timing is driven off the cam, so each degree you move the timing sensor, the timing changes by 2 degrees. Combined with the small 3.125" diameter of the timing sensor plate; every 14 thousandths along the circumference of that plate is a full degree of timing.

When triggered off the flywheel, for every degree you move the sensor, the timing changes by one degree. Then the size of the flywheel is at least twice the diameter of the earlier timing plate (anyone have the exact #?), and you're looked at having to move the sensor by ~1/16" to change one degree of timing. That's an easy tolerance to maintain in an engine manufacturing process.

So, your timing is wrong, and it's not possible for it to be off mechanically, and you've monkeyed with the EEPROM. Is it just me, or does this problem sound self-induced...?

Is it just me, or does this problem sound self-induced...?

I spoke to him at the last SCAB meeting and I suspect this as well.

Mike, could you please explain the process you went through in tuning it again? How did you decide how much fuel and timing to add? Did you do any dataloging? Our conversation before was brief and I want to make sure I understood you correctly.

I'd think the simplest quick fix would be to reload the stock EEPROM data, and if it's running lean from the filter and jardine, maybe just add, oh, 3-5% fuel across the board. Mine runs a bit lean in the lower RPMs, and the 3% add down low helped out. A data log is in order (for both of us), but maybe this could at least knock out some of your problem.

I tried both lean or rich also stock timing however pinging is still there but not always.
Last night, I re-map timing that decrease 5 deg, runs much better and initial timing also lowered.

Before: timing of idle=11deg
After: timing of idle=5deg
