I think we're better off concentrating efforts here with our tens of thousands of existing supporting Buellers. You end up short of thousands and it will possibly have the opposite effect intended.

I attended a seminar, years ago, delivered by the speech writer/PR head of one of Canada's most popular Prime Ministers.

Part of the discussion was about how politicians read public opinion responses. Basically, it depended on how much the individual invested in the issue.

It went something like this:

1000 names on a petition = 1 voter

100 form letters/postcards from one address = 1 voter

10 form letters/postcards individually mailed = 1 voter

1 form letter/postcard with personal comment space = 10 voters

1 personal letter = 100 voters

Numbers may not be exact, it was a long time ago, but you get the drift.

Like anything else you want to succeed in, you have to learn the rules and play all the angles.

I agree with Blake. I don't know if Buell can be salvaged, but everyone's best bet is through a community effort made up of people who trully appreciate and (most importantly) buy the products.

A tool like Facebook is akin to having people sign a petition (see Iamarcangel's post if you want to know why that is bad). Could turn out like Blake suggests in that too few join the cause through that median. Could be that ten's of thousands more chime in just for the sake of the cause, most of whom HD knows will never by a Buell which reduces the value/credibility of the opinions of those who indeed would. Best case scenario, the Facebook campaign has zero effect.

I am new to BadWeb, but there are a lot of members here of which most of whom are or have been customers. I appreciate the passion behind the Facebook effort, but Badweb is the best grassroots vehicle thus far to take the offensive.

I didn't mean to say the FB petition was bad.

It's about the weakest weapon in the arsenal but, hey, use them all. A fight's a fight.

Write, mail.

If it's not worth that little effort, may as well not bother.

These dozen different Facebook pages are diluting any real value... and face it, they are impossible to wade through.

Want to make an impression? Write.

e-petitions are not even worth the paper that they're NOT written on.

But since it's already there the only way too few people support it is by not using it. My name is on the list. You want to talk about little effort? It's just a mouse click.

"I didn't mean to say the FB petition was bad."

Didn't mean to put words in your mouth, archangel. Sorry.

"You want to talk about little effort? It's just a mouse click."

Point taken. But it will either be ignored or held up against other examples of such petitions that implied success of a product/cause when the outcome ended up being the opposite. Trust me: There are far more of those examples in the business world than of petitions that actually predict success. (I can't think of any.) The motorcycle industry especially has a history of emphasized chatter and excitement about new products that lead to financial loss. "Bring it here! I'll buy three of them!"

I suppose I was wrong in saying that the petition is bad, but that is my experience with them.

Heed the words of Slaughter: "Write."

Include your name, location, age, year/model of the Buell you own and those you have owned in the past, Buell models you were planning to buy in the future if any (and when and why), your thoughts about the brand (how you relate to it, to other owners). If you are a first time Buell owner, also let them know what brought you to the brand and why you like it.

Even talk about HD if you want and how this affects your view of their products. DO NOT BE VILE. Just also let them know if you also own/have owned any HD's or were planning to buy one and if the canceling of Buell changes your willingness to own/buy an HD (and be honest!). Also tell them (nicely) if you have no interest in their other products except for Buell.

And don't make it a novel (like this post). Half a page of text max.

A personal letter is best, but rather than a petition (or along with one), it would be good to have forms that Buell owners could fill out which would then produce a standard letter with that owner's information that could be printed out and mailed.

I'd be willing to write a letter. Anybody have an address for the appropriate H-D department?
