I heard about this somewhere maybe here but I did a search and came up with nothing.
Has anyone done the late crank swap to an early motor?
If so can you give me some ideas on what other parts I may need to do this?

Probably several. Crank pin is larger, so you'd need new rods and rod bearing. The 08-up uses a different oiling system and ignition trigger system. You might be able to retain the old ones but I kind of doubt it.

Slaughter mentioned the cases will need to be machined to take the bigger bottom end bearings

What is the advantage of using the larger/newer crank? Is it mostly a horsepower issue for when you push the limits of the motor?

Thanks for the info guys.

Greg its more of a reliability for me being I killed my motor with just over 20,000miles on it. Had 2 1/2 times more than that on my Dynaglide riding the same way, but never had a problem with it at all. So i'm hoping with the bigger rod pin and bearing that it will take the abuse I give it and be more reliable in the long run.

Hals HD/Buell has done several of those '08 crank jobs. I cut/lighten all their crankshafts for race applications.

Yep - it's not an experimental thing - and will give you a "stronger" motor if you tend to keep the revs up higher.

Steve Mackay I'm sure can give you details.

I had by bottom end machining done by another shop (non-Badweb sponsor) but Hals' is THE go-to-place for these kinda things and WILL be done right. You might PM Steve to get his take for not only the modifications but possibly lightening and balancing.

If you do your own wrenching, it's not too bad but it means tearing your motor down to nothing.

Swingarm punched a hole in the cases when the engine and chassis were torn apart

I am interested in the differences in the cam side of the crank. In my search for more power I am looking at upgrading the bottom end and want to know what things must be considered when swapping out for different crankshafts. I would like to retain the current cam position sensor if I can. everything else is something I won't mind changing.

Any info on the differences between early XL(-03), late XL (04-), early XB(-07), and late XB(08-)????

You can retain the cam position sensor. The 08 was when the bigger bottom end, oiler, timing and DDFI3 ECM came into being. I'm sure there were other goodies - those are the ones that would be of interest in any rebuild/upgrade.

yeah - they told me about it in the ER when I started coming around. This was the day after we performed the on-track wedding for our friends at Willow Springs on practice day (they are both racers)

Took a year and a half to get it back to race-readiness without hitting the VISA to do it.

Only part from the other bike that I could re-use was the swingarm. EVERYTHING ELSE was demolished. Bike hooked up and did a full tumble at about 100-ish.

Cool photos Slaughter- thanks for posting. I take it that's a lightened/balanced 08 crank in the photo above?

I guess primary crank sprocket has to be changed as well for the new style splines and bolt vs. nut.

I had to scrap those cases. My buddy's bike that I bought (he broke his motor) - provided the basis for re-starting the whole re-construction.

We borrowed Antelope Valley Buell's tranny tool. I think you might be able to rig up an assembly tool but that factory tool really works slick (don't know how much $$$ it costs to buy)

I guess i'll just have to keep searching to find this tool.
I thought for sure Jims made one but I havnt found it yet.
But atleast I know one exists now.
