Picked up a "Buell in a Box" 2004 XB12R. Right off the bat 2 of the cam bearings are MIA. Are these available from Buell? What are my options?

You should be able to order them from any Buell dealer.

I don't think Buell agrees with you...service manual says if they are out of spec to replace the crankcase. Parts manuals show crankcase and bushings as 1 piece at $700+.

Perhaps Jims? I believe these bearings have to be line bored.

I do not think they are line bored to the cover as the cover is replacable without replacing the crankcase per the service manual.

One possibility is that they are machined after pressing into the crank case.

I wasn't trying to be secretive about where I got it at all. I was trying to be funny in my own convoluted sort of way. "Maybe" meant "yes" in my brain LOL.

JIMS does not perform this type of work or sell any tooling for it. The tech I spoke to said she would kick it down to R&D and see if they wanted to investigate a solution.

Apparently this is a pretty unique situation to be in.

Any other leads?

Damn you! I was hoping to get a set of wheels and some other stuff now that I have a working machine on the way.

The guy told me that the Buell in a Box would not be a good choice to try and put back together when I asked him about it. Sounded like lots of stuff was missing that you will need.

If I can sort out this cam bearing issue this bike will be rebuilt to fully functional. It is complete enough to be worth it to reassemble and complete enough to part out if this cam bearing issue is unresolvable.

Anyone else have any ideas?

If you part it out, since I kind of gave you the tip, can you cut me a break on some parts? Everything to do with the belt drive would be good so I can upgrade my 03, maybe wheels and tires, forks and triples. I think that is really what I wanted out of it. I'm too far from wanting a track bike, so the parts would be really nice for my 03.Would let me mod/color some key parts while keeping mine on the road.

Anyone have a Sportster parts manual? It seems the bearings MAY be available individually for Sportsters. They may be a good start at least.

Greg_e, she doesn't have a foot in the grave just yet! There is some fight left in this puppy and some dedication in this owner.

I will be turning this into a science project before I give up totally if I have to.

If you need an engine I can help. I'm selling a completely dissambled xb12 motor that needs a few parts to fix the shifting issue as well as all the lower end bearings, rings, and honing of cyclinders. Motor ran perfect before I took it apart to fix the shifiting problem. I don't have that bike anymore and have no home for this motor.

You ought to call Hals or John Dahmer and Darkhorse Crank Works/Hoban Brothers. IF it can be done, they can do it.

Spoke to Darkhorse Crankworks...they wanted to do a needle bearing swap. It got pricey quick (more pricey than just buying a new case).

Thanks for the leads. I appreciate them! Keep the suggestions coming.

Anyone know how the case/bushings are manufactured? Are the bushings simply pressed in? OR are they pressed in and machined as an assembly with the case?

I recall someone fixing one of these not too long ago. Something about a noise in the motor.

It isn't the cam cover side that is messed up, it is the crankcase side.

Although, if the bushings are the same...

Can you take some measurements of the bushings? If they are the same, I may buy that cover as a donor!

sorry about that...
I looked at a cam and measured both ends of the Dia of a cam both seem to be the same Outside Dia.

However I cannot tell ya if the Depth of the bushings in the cam cover are the same depth which are pressed into the Engine case but just eye balling it it appears to be, and look to have the same oil grove in them for oiling But you would have to confirmed that they are the same depth I have noway of measuring that You should be able to check that on your end as well........

Also there must be a dozen different machine shops in your area that can do the machining for a needle bearing swap. We have at least 3 in my little area.

From the research I have done needle bearings do not look like an upgrade necessary on a stock street motor. How is end play set with the bearings?

I just dropped the case off at one of the "old school" Harley shops. The guy instantly recognized the XB case when I stepped out of my truck from 20 feet away. He joked that he has probably assembled more Sportster motors than Buell has built XBs. He felt confident he could fix it and told me to stop by Friday.
