I know this sounds like a strange question, but let me explain.

My stator died, I ordered another one from the dealership. Took 5 days, and they ordered the wrong part. Should have known when it was a lot more expensive on American Sport Bike. Should have ordered it from them, I know!

Anyway, they ordered the right part now, but I need to wait obviously.
I have a track day coming up on the 5th. I just replaced a bad rocker box gasket, and did the hidden caliper mod on the bike. I really need to make sure these are fixed as well as do some more datalogging before I hit the track. I will not have time next weekend, as I am going away.

My question is, can I run the bike for short periods of time without the stator? Say twenty minutes at a time to datalog?

Are there many risks to this?

You can do it, in fact the guy that makes the speedcell battery has a race bike without a stator to reduce rotating mass. He has a quick connect system on his batteries and swaps them in between sessions and throws the old one on a charger.


Can the XB last that long on a stock lead battery? Hard to say.

when your instrument cluster dies, you are barely have enough juice left to keep sparking those plugs; maybe a mile or so at highway speeds/RPMs

meanwhile, everyone else will notice your headlights are dimming, but you won't until you coast to a stop and dismount .... well, i didn't.

Hmm interesting. I might have to try it. My battery is good, and I would only be out for 15-20 at a time. I also have HID's, I put a switch on them, so I can just keep the head lights off. That will decrease the drain.
I will let you know how it works out.

Pull the tail light fuse too, minimize your consumption.

Also, before going nuts, are you sure your stator is dead? Usually its just a bad "77" connector that gives the symptoms of a bad stator.

Remember that the battery capacity would have to run your pump, injectors, sensors and ECM. And they are looking for a specific voltage range as well!

Do this - run the bike and take a current reading from the battery. Divide the Amp-Hour of the battery (maybe 1.2 AH for an MC battery?) by the current reading. Then you will get a rough time of how long you will be able to run with only your battery.

Warning - deep cycling of batteries is a quick way to shorten their life... unless you can get a deep cycle battery?

Yeah I have been down the diagnosis road. The stator is already out, the two coils near the wires were all burnt up.
