I have been commuting 500+ miles a week and checking the bike over every weekend.

This weekend there is oil on top of the primary case and back up toward the rear cylinder head. Oil stains on the LH side go down to the muffler.

My '08 XB12Ss has been leak proof until now, but now there are drips of oil on the ground. Oil level is down a bit. Bike still runs good.

Can't see where it is coming from so will wash and ride again to try and find the leak.

Any ideas?

Check your primary case oil level. I have some of the same and shifting to neutral was getting hard. I ended up adding a fair amount. ('07 w/ 6k miles)

It could be the rear rocker cover. Look in the area of the cooling fan outlet (a film of oil there is a pretty clear indication), remove the seat and look down through the frame openings at the rear cylinder rocker cover. Occasionally a PVC valve can get dislodged from one of the rocker covers allowing oil to spew, so that's worth checking too.

I agree with Hugh on the rear rocker box. My '08 was leaking from that spot; dealer replace all the gaskets back there and now it's clean.

if it's an '08, why are you worrying about it? why not just take it in and get it fixed under warranty?

My 08 had a rocker cover leak at the rear cylinder.

Andymnelson-Some 08's are already out of warranty. Mine is.

Same deal here, only took the tech 3 hrs to replace the gasket. Been great since.

I just had both rocker gaskets changed on my '08 XB12R 2 weeks ago while it was still under warranty.

Thanks, and 2 good calls

Rear valve cover is the culprit, and the dealer says it is still under warranty.

For grins I checked the valve cover bolts and they all seem tight.

Looks like they will have to rotate the engine to change the gasket.

Question is, will they honor the warranty with all my little mods on the bike, Drummer, breather mod., different filters, etc., and they have not seen the bike since the first service.
