how many of you use the gps to plan a route? if so maybe the TYRE software can be really interesting for you, you can download it here: http://www.janboersma.nl/gett/index.php easy to use and I think a very nice software, you can plan your route just using the connection with google maps and then transfer it to your gps automatically very nice | ||

Haven't played with it, but if it does what I think it does and provided my garmins will read the gpx files then it is fooking awesome... | ||

I tried and it is amazing ... is the first one who does convert into TomTom file and if I remember correct it does it also for Garmin and many others .... try it is very easy .. | ||

Be careful using Tyre and the Garmin GPX files. It's not 100% accurate. Double check, and edit the route in Mapsource. But for the TOMTOM, it rocks! (Message edited by Steve_mackay on September 05, 2009) | ||

takeitwithme .... sounds nice but it seems does convert only for garmin... I will try maybe i will use other simple program to convert the gpx to itn ... Sorry but what is HD ride plan ? never heard before .... | ||

Our group uses HD ride planner for all of our rides. You'll need something to convert the GPX to itn. Tyre does this. And, if it's a long ride, with over 50 waypoints, you'll need to split it up. One of the bad things with TOMTOMs is they wont do itinerary over 50 waypoints. Rocco, you need a TOMTOM, Navigon, or higher end Garmin to take advantage to GPX files for computer based routing. GPX files are a glorified XML file with GPS coordinates in them. I've used all three of the above GPSs. The best one for custom turn by turn navigation is Garmin, hands down. The Navigon I had was too slow to really work properly for the rides I created. TOMTOMs have a stupid 50 waypoint per route limit. | ||

Nuvi 550 or 500 The only difference between the two are the included maps. Just planned a route for my Garmin using Tyre. Excellent!!! A++++ Gives you a good view in Google of those awesome secondary roads that are hard to find in mapsource. Just drop your waypoints, order them correctly in the queue by moving them up or down, and then calculate and save as a GPX file (if you are using mapsource). Open mapsource, find and open the .GPX file, and right click on the route and hit "recalculate". Mapsource did a pretty damn good job of translating it. Save it as a GDB file and it's ready to upload to your Garmin. Thanks for letting us know about this. I will fool around with takitwithme as well. | ||

OK. I just got a garmin 500. If I plan a ride on the H-D site, do I still need to convert the file of will it just load to the gps? | ||

Not sure about the HD site. You need to be able to save the file as a .GPX which is kind of the industry standard. If you can save it as a .GPX, then you can reopen it in Mapsource (which is the Garmin supplied map program) then recalculate it, and resave it as a .GDB (Garmin File), then upload it to your GPS. This sounds more complicated than it really is. | ||

Rocco, nope. Just connect up your GPS, and click on the red "GPS Synchronization" button on the upper right hand corner of the screen. Then click "Detect my device". You may need to download the garmin plugin however. | ||
