I've finally been able to put some miles on my new to me 05 XB12S. I've had it for a while, but due to title issues, my riding has been limited. At any rate, the bike sat for over a year before I bought it. I promptly changed all the fluids, combed over the bike, and got riding.

At first, I noticed the bike surged badly on constant throttle. Changed the plugs, reset the TPS and AFV, and used TM's square idle - with great results...just like my XB9. However, there is still a light surge at constant throttle that irritates me. It is not present during acceleration or deceleration, and the bike runs and feel GREAT. In fact, I'd say its one of the strongest 12's I've ridden, and I've been on many. I've done a bit of research on here, and this appears to be a common concern. How has everyone approached this problem? Still completely stock on the engine for now. I'll get around to opening up the intake and rerouting the breathers, but I want this fixed first.

Also, since this thing makes sooo much more torque than I'm used to (XB9 and my last bike - VFR), I'm still getting used to rolling on the throttle. There is a distinct 'light switch' feel to the throttle. From closed to partial, it is impossible to be smooth. This makes slow speed turns and parking lot maneuvers difficult without using some clutch. Idle is set to ~1100RPM, so I don't want to go any higher. This is more pressing than the surging IMO. Thoughts? I've considered regearing the primary just to shorten the final drive, but I feel there should be another way to 'fix' this.

As always, your insight is appreciated.

The breather reroute may help your situation. It helped mine A LOT! Took all of my surges away. Also, I chopped my airbox when I did my breather reroute. I also have an 05, so you may get similar results. I had a K&N in there, and it leaned it out a little, so I went back to the stock filter. Right now I rut totally stock, except for the breather mod, and the chopped airbox, and have no surging that I am aware of.........smooth like buttah!

Check the primary chain, mine was surging at low speeds like when parking and coming to a stop. Primary chain was loose, got it tighten...no more surges.

Primary chain is good (enough). Surging is at all speeds, constant throttle.

I'll consider doing the reroute earlier on accord of this conversation. Speaking of intake related mods, does anyone have a link to the thread/test about the snorkle? I'd like to do some digging before I chop and I vaguely recall hearing that snorkle removal was detrimental...

I think the common consensus on snorkle is to remove it if you're talking about the rubber piece through the frame. If you're talking about the velocity stack inside the air filter most people will tell you not to touch it.

Yeah, I was talking about the rubber piece in the frame. The velocity stack is clearly there for a reason from a tuning perspective. That will stay...

Some people get them confused.

You're not trying to do parking lot and slow speed in first gear, are you? Use second for everything. First is to get you moving and towing school buses out of mud (just kidding on the bus).

Other Buellers: does idle at 1100 rpm seem a bit high?

No, no parking lot stuff. I'm talking tight back roads where I'm entering off the throttle and need to start reapplying right about when I'm entering the turn (depends on the road).

Second works fine, but there are way too many vibes to be smooth in the situations I've encountered.

I set the idle per the manual and it feels good. Idles smooth and pulls way great. No hanging revs or idle...did the same on my 9.

quick test, next time you're riding and it starts acting up, carefully move your hand so its partly gripping the ignition switch housing and the grip at the same time so you effectively lock the throttle. If it gets alot better read on...

my '04 does the same thing. spent hundreds on replacing things. the 9's and 12's can both exhibit this trait (12's are worse). in the absence of bad plugs or bad gas, the only way I've found is to use the datalogger and map the problem out.
