Let me start off by saying this is the first time I've posted in the XBoard section. I normally hang out in the Uly section (until I totaled my Uly last weekend at the track!).

I'm now in the market for a dedicated track bike. I want to stick with Buells so I'm thinking XB9R or XB12R. I've never ridden either so my question is: does a 12R provide significantly more power than a 9R? I'm 6'3" 228 lbs and wondering if a 9R will be able to pull me around the track. If I went with a 9R, how much does it run to upgrade to the 1203cc motor? I know that an 1125R is the ideal bike but the money is not there for one. Whatcha think?

My Uly worked decent for the track, I was faster than most guys in the turns and technical stuff but then they'd run away from me down the straights. Is this going to be the same with the XBR or will it do better in the straights?

The 12 has more power in the top end and the taller gearing allows it to get up to higher speeds. Not a huge difference between your Uly and the R in the straights, but the R will make your Uly looks like a bus in the turns. : )

I'm 6'5" 200 lbs. and i have the 12R. I would go with the 12 cause of your weight, i feel my bike likes to be sluggish sometimes with me riding it cause i have my fat days once in awhile

I can run with any 12 on my 9...up to 130. I LOVE my 9 on the street, but if I was buying one for the track it would be the 12.

Personally, I don't think the weight is an issue since they are geared different...it's more a matter of what you are using it for.

I dig the low end grunt of the 12.

Save your money and go with the 1125R - and buy a used one if money is an issue.

Air cooled engines are great for street use, but not for track bikes...

Sounds to me like your looking for a bike almost totally dedicated to the track.

Are you THAT connected to Buell?

A 600cc Japanese bike is going to be MUCH MUCH faster then any 12 is ever going to be and for the track, will probably handle a lot better.

They are cheap used, nearly bullet proof, lots of aftermarket (cheap fairings in case you go down again) etc... etc...

The 12R (lower weight and better aero) should fare a little better than your Uly when going down the straights. Also the top end of the 12R is better than the 9R.

Reasonably priced air-cooled trackbike = XB12R.

yea I would say 12 for the track

9 is for riding every day or down town stuff... my 9 has manners that I didn't feel on a 12, but that said who cares about city manners on the track? the 12 is more of a brute. unleash it on the track!
