I will try to be as detailed as I can about my bike , the mods, and what is going on with it.

the bike is a 2003 xb9r i purchased it used the beginning of this year. TZhe bike had an oil leak when i bought it, blwon fork seals, and a bad tire. it has all been fixed by a dealer.

The bike has a K&N filter. Race pipe, Im assuming the generic race pipe buell would fit, as there are no markings, but it is dual exit. And a race ECM, this is the second race ecm i have owned so far. Paradise H-D also told me the bike had an aftermarket cam in it.

When the oil leak was fixed it rode fine, nothing crazy went on.. then all of a sudden.. one day.. HUGE flat spot from 3-4K rpms. if i understand correctly, this is closed loop. I took it to the dealer. They replaced the intake seals, the intake manifold, the air box cover. the oil, the spark plugs, and wires. and last but not least.. My ECM.. at this point. I had paid 2,480 dollars in parts and labor.. they dyno'd it,and sent it my way.. It ran great.. For a week. The flat spot came back. It didnt matter what gear I was in.. it was always there, at any throttle position. at any speed. I reset the TPS via: ECMspy, and the AFV to 100% to no avail. since then The bike sat for a couple weeks while i busted my brain. I started doing the mapping on it. I replaced the o2 sensor which didnt throw a trouble code. But i knew was bad. The bike has never thrown a trouble code. except for when I unplugged the AIT sensor to see if it would. I cleared it , Yes.

It ECMspy, in the mapping page. I added fuel to just about every box, by an even a amount to all ranges. today I was thinking.. Why not just add it to the exact "cells" or boxes it uses for CL,WOT,and CLC .. I added the fiuel.. Only upped it by a few digits, front and back.and i kept the rear richer than the front, as i am told it is supposed to be like this by the dealer. i also disabled the ''O2 sensor always rich'' trouble code.. just to see if it would run.. my tps is set at 7.1 and it ticks over finebut the idle is a little jumpy.. I rode it after all this..and reset the TPS and AFV again.. and it seemed to ride fine.. But i really need help. I have no idea what it could be..and if the dealer put a race exm in..wouldnt it compinsate for the Air /Fuel ratio?...

I am looking to find someone who will take a little time to help.. I don't mind sending my ecm to someone if they can help me tune it. Im not a complete professional with ecm spy.. but any input is bettere than none..

thanks..

It's a bit late for you but the '03 stock ECM and the Race ECM are the same. Only the map is different so if you're okay with it, you can buy the cheaper one and change the mapping. The other years are different besides the maps.

How did you know the O2 sensor was bad?

Somebody will help you do the megalog viewer thing. When you get a chance, look for the AIT readings to see if there's any drop in temperature reading that doesn't make sense. An AIT sending out wrong info won't trigger a code but it will initiate the fuel enrichment circuit which is like the old school choke suddenly coming on.

Go for the better advice here. I think your dealer is shooting in the dark, bless their socks.

ya I was thinking it could be the AIT sensor too.. I knew the o2 sensor was bad.. because i replaced it with a OEM buell sensor..and instantly.. I had thrown a code for running to rich. lol. I fixed that.and the code.. I don't know hwo to use the mega log thing. If someone is willing.. I am willing to do what It may take.

I don't know to much about this electronic stuff. However there are some people on here that do. It sounds like it's time for someone to step up and assist this down Bueller. Your dealer seems to be good at draining your wallet, I would stay away from them. Have you checked the Knowledge Vault ?

First off.. thank you for the replies. ya.. I have looked around. but also tried almost everything that it suggests for my particular symptoms.. I was kind of curious if someone else having these same problems had a fuel map, or eeprom that i could run...that is upgraded ..you know..one that worked for them.Im literally at my witts end.. Im considering parting it out.. because i cant get to the bottom of it.

How about the engine temp sensor? Maybe its freaking out and the engine thinks its cold? Does the fan come on ok?

Yep the fan comes on if it's warm. Sitting in bad traffic, or sometimes..even if i just park it in the garage after a good 40 miles ride.. it runs and checks out good in the diagnostics aswell.. Does anyone know the price and part number for the AIT sensor?.... I was hoping to get some megalog help before i spent any more money.

Ill give it some time.. as I read more and more.. People everywhere seem to have these issues with their xb9s.. either flat spots in 3-4k range.. or 4-5 k range..why would buell offer these race kits if they caused so many problems.. I don't get it.. I hope someone with some knowledge chimes in soon.. ( not to say you guys arent smart)... just someone with surperior know how than me.

Im getting sick of riding my r6.. 09' or not..no power..

Does it still have the original inner air box cover? The one that is flat, no inverted nipple?

If so, a 12 inner cover which has the inverted nipple that sits over the velocity stack will smooth out the airstream into the throttle body and get rid of some of that stumble.

They're under $40 brand new so it's something to think about if your bike doesn't already have one.

Also check to see if the snorkel has been removed.

When I say snorkel I mean the rubber snorkel found inside the frame's air passage.

NOT the rubber velocity stack attached to the throttle body.

Edit: My input is all supplemental stuff. Not a solution. But it was better than simply typing 'bump'

well bump. :-p

And FWIW- I have an '03 XB9 with race kit (well, my girlfriend does), and it runs fantastic. The "flat spot" most refer to is not some hugely problematic thing, it's just just not a super linear powerband. Sounds to me like you definitely have some other issue unrelated to Buell's engineering of the race kit...

If it comes down to it and you think it would help, send me your ECM. I'll try it out in my bike and see how it runs, and if need be I'll reflash it with my mostly stock maps that run well in my bike.

By the way, my 9 is an 06, has a drummer muffler and race ecm, 24k miles, and it has no flat spots so to speak. I hit 3k, and it pulls nice all the way to redline. Love that little 9 motor.

It wouldnt do me justice putting the 12 airbox cover back on, as i am not getting enough fuel, and too much air. i have one. but i put the stock one back on. I know im getting too much air, or not enough fuel, because if i richen it.. it runs way better.

I talked to buell this morning and they said the 3-5 flat spot is very common and it takes some fine tuning by a qualified buell specialest..unfortunately..there are none in russia, so i am a little out of luck at the moment.

I appreciate the offer to have me send you my ECM but i need a very rich mixture. in order to have it run. Im not sure why at the moment.. I have even tried putting thr stock filter setup back on, and it ran great....there just wasnt a lot of power. the bike has 18xxx miles on it.. i take care of it.. oil change ever 2500..full synthetic since the day i got it. new plugs wires, every 4500...regular check ups with the stealerships.

well, I just thought id update. incase anyone else ever needed to search based off of my problems. Don't let them become yours.
apparently the 03-04 xb9 engine temp. sensors are faulty. I talked to the head tech today at a shop about 3k miles away from me. he suggested replacing it as it was only about 42 bucks.. i ran up to the dealer.. 2 hours away..and they had that, and a intake air temp sensor in stock. I replaced them both. ( had to make a home made slotted socket for the head temp sensor... Worked out alright.. broke two dremel bits, whatever.. Before i cranked the key on..AT ALL... i re flashed the ECM with an origional race map that came with the ecm spy dick.. simple, right?.. I reset the TPS and the AFV to 100% started it up and... wow.. the idle is super smooth.. the torque is back in my mid ranges... there is no noticable flat spot.. and i ran it hot.. then had to adjust the idle down a bit. Apparently the engine temp sensors go abd. and tell the afv. to basically choke it out in the closed loop rpm ranges.... the bike thinks it colder than it is. Im not for sure that the IAT sensor was bad.. but for 12 dollars.. it is worth it.. I also popped in anoew O2. sensor last friday.. all in all it has been a 2 month head game.. and im not 100 % confident that it is over.. But we shall see....

also.. I had a couple more questions.. After running it hot. city, freeway, city... home.. what should my air dens. correction be at?.. i was at 107 when i replaced everything, came home plugged it in to ecm spy and i was at 97.. Is this correct?.. today was muggy, not too warm.. but ya.. im running the k&n filter with a stock non drilled lid.. Im actually too afraid of messing up the mapping again by running my box delete..

second question, if i was to run the air box delete mod.. ( i have the top cover to make it work) does any one have a map for an xb9 with a race pipe, k&N filter, and race map they have used that works very well for them?

again, thank you for all the input you guys have put fourth. and if anyone ever needs help in russia, im around!.. I know its far frommost of you, but you never know!
