I am going to change my oil soon and am looking for whether a change to synthetic would be a bad idea on an XB with 21,000 miles that is used to Dino.
I have read differing things on this subject. Any info?

Question -
If you've already heard different things, what makes you think asking here will give any different answers?

My take...do it. No harm will come to your engine and or primary/transmission if that is your question.

Mine get Mobil 1 at about 500 miles. and from then on.

Well, your question is the same that went through my head when I typed it. I do not think I will get a full agreement on one idea, but I do value the opinions and experiences of others with XB's. I am not "seasoned" at maintenance by any means and just dont want to fall for old wives tails.

More specifically, what I am refering is the idea that "seals and gaskets get conditioned to one type of oil" so stick with what has been used (synth or dino) prior.

Synthetic is better oil. If that is what you are looking to gain, then go for it. Absolutely no reason not to do so that I know.

It's an old myth that swapping from Dino to syn at higher mileage will make your engine leak....
100% pure BS!

Syn is a better oil all around, get what you pay for here!

79 cents for golden state = very poor oil
$8.99 for V Twin Mobil1 = best oil out there!

Of course this is just my 2 cents.

I also just bought an 02 silverado with 101K on her.
Only fluid EVER changed was the engine oil with bottom of the barrel penzoil.

What did I do....
Changed the engine oil to syn mobil1, changed trans to syn Valvoline VI, diff to syn and power steering to syn....

I had a few old timers tell me that's a big no-no.
They've just feel victim to believing an old myth...

Guy I bought the truck from said a local agency has to rebuild there motors every 75K from the synthetic being soo slick, it doesn't support the bearings good... HAHA! But again he also thought it was a 4.8 liter when it was really a 5.3!

synthetic is better do it I do wonder why you didn't do it earlier in the summer as it will make the engine run a little cooler and friction in an interenal combustion engine is not your friend but either way your fine

I have to disagree. I had until 2 years ago a Amsoil dealer of many years live a few doors down from me. Now I use synthetics in all my stuff. Anyways I bought a few years back a high mileage AWD Astro van that had the 4.3 liter in it. I thought heck I'm going to treat this thing to a good oil. So I went to my Neighbor for oil and filter. He said Dana if that what you want to do thats fine but be aware that with the high mileage on the truck you may create leaks in a engine thats been running standard oil. I changed the oil and in about two week of driving... maybe 500 miles the damn thing was pissing in my driveway. I changed back with a 40 weight and the leak stopped.

I had a similar experience to Dana's.

I put syn in my Ford Turnover (Bronco II) at a little over 180K miles. 180K hard miles and have yet to have the engine rebuilt.

Anyway.. With the syn I got a good oil weep.
I switched to a syn/dino blend and it remedied the problem.

I'm at 198K miles now and still ticking.
I think that's mainly because the little Ford just doesn't know any better.

Keith Richards should drive this truck : )


The bike at hand though, with only 21K miles should be just fine on syn. It's no where near worn out yet.

I have never heard of the "myth" but I feel safer running synthetic.

Amsoil is what I'd recommend, from what I hear they have the best test data and are generally well liked by a lot of riders. I have heard mixed things about Mobile 1 (valve noise etc...) and I tried Royal Purple for a while, worked fine but I didnt like that it literally was purple, hard to see if its getting dirty.

If you feel more comfortable with dino though thats fine, lots of people like to run dino on a shorter interval (1500-2000 miles) rather then synthetic on a longer one.

Why not before now....my summer has been packed with extended family drama that had 3 extra people living with us (for a year) and I didnt have the brain cells left. They are gone, I am trying to recover.

I am going to change it this week. Now I have the choice of SYN3, Amsoil, or mob. Probably going amsoil, It can be purchased the closest to my house.

If it makes you feel better about it, I ran that program intentionally on my '06 Uly when I bought it new. I ran the dino for 20,000+ miles to give it a good true break in. Then I switched to Mobil 1 VTwin. It is now at 41,000 miles and thus far oil leaks have not been on my list of problems. It does well on it, and for the way I ride my bike I am set up to change it at about every 4,000 miles or so. I do the trans with formula+ at every oil change.

20k for a break in? I'd say that's a little more than a break in. But what do I know?

I'd be afraid to change a 100k+ engine over to synthetic, but it sounds like 20k should be ok. I wish I had read this a couple weeks ago - I would have gone synthetic. I always thought it was bad to switch to synthetic after running dino for so long. Yes, I believed old wives and their tales.

Switching to synthetic oil in an engine with high mileage can result in oil leakage- but the synthetic oil does not cause the leak. If a high mileage engine develops "sludge", or build-up deposits, it can actually "fill-in" gaps where oil should be leaking. The superior characteristics of synthetic oils, especially detergency, removes this build-up and can result in leakage. Synthetic oil does not cause a leak- it just shows you where your engine has damage that has been hidden by inferior oil.

Synthetic oil can show your engine's weakness, it's up to you whether you want to fix it- or just replace the band-aid. A high mileage engine without wear-induced leaks will not start leaking after switching to synthetic oil. I guess it just boils down to whether or not you want to know if your engine really does have leaks or not.

Yes it may sound weird, I too am waiting for about 20,000 mi. on the clock before switching to synth. I don't think it is worn in until there.

Ourdee, I agree. I bought my bike with 7300 on the clock. I now have 10800, and it keeps getting smoother and smoother. Right now at 3-4k rpm ,in any gear, its as smooth as any I4 I have ever owned. I am running dino oil.
