I am being offered a 2007 XB12scg in midnight black with 7800 miles for $6200 (Think I can get him down to $6000). It has been laid down on the right side on a gravel driveway, so there is some cosmetic damage (at least I won't feel bad falling over at a stop light). After reading about the upgrade on the 08'+ ecm I am wanting one of those. But am I over-looking a good deal? I am also thinking that the end of the ride season is coming to an end very soon and with my luck the second I buy it a even better deal will come along and I will hate myself for buying the bike. When the exact bike I am looking for would be '08+ in a translucent with no damage.

Personally, I wouldn't pay that for cosmetic damage. Especially if the frame is scratched up...?? Are you familiar with the scg? Have you sat on the scg and the s, side by side? For me (5' 11") the scg is too low.

If the damage is not too bad, 6K sounds like an OK price. Is the bike in TX?

It is just scratches a puck completely covers them, and the very end of the swing arm is scratched. The bike is in Oklahoma but the guy works in El Paso and is willing to meet me in San Antoino at a dealer so we can use their lift to swap the bike from truck to truck. I know that during the winter I can find a great deal. Roar by the Shore (Bikefest) is in October and I wanted to be on an XB but I don't mind I'll ride the Blast. No shame, I like the bike.

Sounds like you want a 2008 or newer. IMO, you should hold out for the bike you want. You already have a bike so you can take your sweet time finding the one that says "buy me!!"

I would not buy a downed XB without removing the frame pucks. I have seen pictures of dents under the pucks that were only noticeable with pucks off!

The Buell parts web page...new pucks $49.95

Cheap peace of mind! My $.02

I've seen the pictures of the bike Roy is looking at, the frame isn't damage but is scraped up where the puck would be. It appeared to be completely cosmetic, and the frame puck covered it all anyway.

Only other visible damage was the swingarm, nothing can be done about that without something like removing and repowdercoating.

I thought they made paint in a spray can to match the frame/swingarm?

For just a little more you could go see Ft Bstrd out there in Tennessee and have a heck of a time and come out with a great New bike.

of course, this is just my .02 worth

I agree with Deadduck on this one. get a great ride and.... a great ride.

I don't know about Texas but here in MI if the frame is even scratched it is scrapped. the scratch compromises structural integrity and last I checked you cannot title the bike that way.

I am in no rush to buy. I have a "cute" bike as Erik Buell so delicately put it, and I can wait for the one that says "BUY ME". I got the Blast for a daily commuter and its worked out great. I have chicken stripes that are just about gone and have had a great time doing it. Don't think most "real" sportbikes have them as thin as my little Blast. Deadduck- That idea is actually floating around, but in the case of buying new I would wait till next spring to make sure nothing comes up. Delta_One are you serious?

dead serious I am afraid. when I was still chief adjuster for a body shop it was an instant flag towards a total loss. granted that was many years ago but it makes sense to an extent. just like your helmet shell loads will travel along the surface of the material under stress. that scratch will act like a break point or a notch, these can cause (under extreme loads) a bend in steel frames and tears of complete breaks in aluminum. for some reason the state of Michigan and all insurance co.'s operating here have decided that the risk is just too great. most likely due to our roads being less than great, our bumps and potholes could rival any supermoto track in the county. that and some yahoo most likely won a lawsuit based on frame damage. but it is a scratch in the actual metal of a particular depth (sorry I don't remember that depth anymore but it was very small)the thickness of the powder coat was subtracted from the damage. but it came down to if you did it with your keys you were ok anything else was just too bad.

I'll add my vote for "hold out for what you want'.

Nothing worse than settling on a what you think is a deal than finding the 'perfect bike' a month later.

Luckily that hasn't happened to me but I've seen others fall to the impulsive deal buy only to regret it.

The '08 engine is mucho superior with the larger crank pin and new vastly improved oiling system. I'd hold out for an '08 or '09 that grabs your attention.

+1 on reconsidering the scg...

Unless you really need such a short bike, it is a compromised suspension with minimal travel. I had thought about getting one because I wanted the shorter wheelbase, but now I am EXTREMELY glad I went with the high travel STT suspension on my 12Ss. Its tall, but I'm not short, and it feels great... and I still manage to bottom it out on the wild goat trails ; ).

Im even pretty glad I got the 2" longer wheelbase, I like the stability.

Blake- Thanks, that was the piece of info I was looking for. I am going to wait. The winter season should produce a few bikes. Thanks to all that chimed in.

There are plenty out and about now. You were prepared to spend $6K on a dinged up used bike. Some dealers are running deals for new off the floor '08 models for just $8.5K, and that for a Ulysses. Your XB12S should be even less if they have them.

Hey! The 08+ models arn't that much better!
*grumble grumble* hehe just joking. joker

The 08's got some really nice improvements.
Some 08's had some growing pains that have been sorted so if you get an 08 make sure your dealer checks to see if it has the latest ecm flash. Then she'll be golden : )
