while the bike is torn down, i might as well clean the sucker up.. i have already cleaned the pistons but needed the heads to be worked on. Im short on change so i plan to do this head first. I called up the dealer and asked how much it would cost JUST to remove the valve springs (so i can get to the ports myself) $120.. yea ok right.. how much to put them back on? another $120.. uh huh good luck there dealer  I went over to autozone, rented out a valve spring compressor for 25bucks. and did the job myself. too easy. good thing is that I get my $25 back when i return the thing to autozone.... I've got one of the heads already done, cleaned and ported (with at dremmel and non-abrasive cleaning bit. too easy, shame on the dealer. what a pos sales rep, shame on you (Message edited by ochoa0042 on August 18, 2009) | ||

I think your being a bit harsh on the dealer. They're charging you, what, an hour and a half labour to take heads they've never seen, take the valves out and package them for you. Then later, take a basket that they are told has all the parts, experience tells them it probably doesn't, and put it together. Sounds about right to me. You got to vote with your feet and that sounds right too. And you got to learn some more mechanic stuff too, bonus. | ||

$60 in all.. thats what I was willing to pay. it really was a sinch to take them off and put back on | ||

Don't forget that when a shop does it they are now assuming LIABILITY for the part in case of a failure. Think about what a shop has to spend money on: Electricity, gas, rent, taxes, insurance, labor, tools, security and they also need to pull a profit on it all as well. Consider yourself fortunate though that it's in the private sector - imagine how much the GOVERMENT would SPEND if they did the work; probably cost $1,200! Your tax dollars hard at waste... Capitalism ROCKS! | ||

There is no way any dealer on the planet would take responsibility for any valve issues you would have after this was done. He has no idea as to what you're doing to your head/engine and unless the dealer was completely re-assembling your engine and installing it, I'm willing to bet there'd be zero warranty on anything. (I know I wouldn't warranty any work done like that). Still, $120 for ten minutes work is just stupid expensive. Doing it yourself is the way to go for something this simple and quick. These Sportster based engines are just too easy to work on yourself to pay some unknown mechanic to mess with it, IMO. | ||

What happens if they drop the head and ruin it? They will get you a new one. What happens if their apprentice accidently jacks up the valve seat while removing it? They will get you a new one. Yes, the dealer would be held liable. Of course what happens to the parts AFTER the shop is done with it is your responsibility. You are supposed to inspect the parts prior to paying for them... I'm not saying that taking parts to a shop is a good economical decision; only that you are paying for far more than just a mechanic's time... | ||
