If you can find a good powder coater you could have the cylinders powder coated gloss black with the fins highlighted in red (or any other color). Powder will hold up better then paint.

thanks Lpcoating but here in switzerland it's very hard to find someone for powercoating at reasonable price.

I search HD/Buell engine pics to see color schemes

It's typically not recommended to powdercoat air cooled engine parts.

Aren't they powdercoated right from the factory? If not, what is it then?

you can purchase some black /grey harley factory style paint from a dealer.

Black will not cool as efficiently for what its worth. Powder coat will not let any heat out, but ceramic coat will be very tough and cool to the touch.

For what its worth, my fav is:

Black cases, silver cyl, black rocker covers

Theoretically, dull black paint would be the best at cooling the engine with it's higher emissivity. But I do agree that powdercoat, being as thick as it is, may cause some cooling issues. I still can't believe that people are getting away with painting/powdercoating their air-cooled engines!

Powdercoat isnt as thick as people seem to think.

Maybe it's because it poses no real threat to the engine, or it was done properly, or both.

I painted my sportster motor black with the Harley engine paint. The stuff is pricey, but it worked really well & looked good for years.
