I think its from the steel oil lines rubbing again or some where around the oil filter. Its the most ive ever seen it leak and is leaving a puddle and you could really smell it burning on the exhaust. Its due for the 20K service but I was holding off on it since im not 100% sure on my mileage ever since my odo crapped out on me and is off by a few thousand miles.

So anyway, does anyone know of a good quick fix for the steel oil lines to get me 15 miles to my dealership?? or is it not that big a deal.

Tighten all fittings just to rule them out.

"Its the most ive ever seen it leak" there should be NO leaks if you have any investigate dont ignor or they will do one of two things.
1. Get worse
2. Stop (usualy because you have run the engine dry.)

Clean it all up and then find out where the oil is coming from, watch while it idles. Then make a decision on it

The oil line fittings were improved for the 04s. Your model will mist a bit of mung unless you pull the lines off, clean the fittings up real well with contact cleaner and then reinstall with Loctite PST on the male fittings.
That's assuming your lines are intact, of course.

Viros,
Your getting closer to me on the mileage. another 6k and you'll be right there.(where I was that is...LOL). You guy's are lucky that I'm leaving for 2 years and can't take her with me. I might be able to hit 40k before I leave though.

Ok Oil Problems. Mine comes and goes, I clean off the area and tighten everything that I can. The dealership has put teflon tape on my front lines & oil pump lines. I found that using 3 cans of brake cleaner with the plastics removed cleans all the road crap off of the engine real nice.
(Not recommended with a "Hot" engine)
Unless of course you would like to see a flaming Firebolt.

Unless it is fitted and installed properly, the oil filter is suspect.

Need to fill it half way before screwing it on and hand tighten LIGHTLY or you will blow out the gasket.

That is my bet on your problem.

Fittings around the filter or oil filter is my guess. I'm not certain about the blown gasket if you don't put oil in the filter (4oz.?) but I've heard it before and I put the oil in MY filter and she's not leaky yet... So far I've only gotten oil out of a line that runs down to the left footpeg. I do need to follow that back up to see where it's coming from though... It dripped three drips the first fairly warm day we've had up here since I got the bike (about 85 degrees or so). Oh, and a little seepage out of the fittings on the oil cooler, tightened them up, all good.

possible dumb question: the oil filter is mounted vertically. why does the manual call for 4 oz of oil in the filter? why would i NOT fill the filter with oil? it was full when i removed it, so it does not seem likely that a fresh filter FULL of clean oil could do more damage than an old filter full of dirty oil. i dont get it..... obviously.

I'm probably way off base on this fullpower, but I have always thought by filling a new filter with 4 oz. of new oil you are essentially "priming" it so oil flows freely through the filter as soon as possible. I'm sure there are other reasons that more knowledgeable folks can tell us about. What do I know anyway???

Mike.

Just follow the manual and don't tighten very much. Otherwise, you will get to do it again and again.

Full - I doubt you could harm anything by filling the filter all the way (though you may very well slop some out when you tighten it down), but just make sure that the TOTAL amount of new oil you put in does not exceed 2 1/2 quarts, and that includes whatever went in the filter.

When I change my oil, I fill the filter abouot 3/4 of the way, then dump the rest of the 2 1/2 qts into the swingarm. No leaks, no blowing oil into the airbox, and this thing hardly eats any oil at ALL. After over 3000 miles on the NE tor last summer it was still right at the mark where I had filled it last.

It has been my understanding that the purpose for filling the filter with oil was to bring up the oil pressure more quickly. Other wise the oil pump has to fill the filter, costs a few seconds without oil pressure. Never a good thing.

I've just changed oil and found that the area around the oil pump/lines had a bit of grunge on 'em; I intend to keep an eye on this, although mine doesn't leave any drips; you might want to do a retightening of your oil pump bolts.

The XB's been in the shop since Friday I rode it with the small leak and rolled in the service lot with the thing steaming from oil hitting the header/exhaust. Ive been out of town and just got in & talked with service today, they said I had several leaks and their waiting on head gaskets to come in (i didnt even notice that leak)
It was also the steel oil lines and I forget what else he said. Seems like lots of leaks, I take it in at every service appointment since Im not mechanicly inclined and have a real busy work schedule. There doing the warranty work and my 20K appointment, funny how a 10K maintence cost $735 dollars here. Makes the unlimited service for 3 years package I purchased well worth the $1600 dollars considering Ive only had the bike 11 months. anyhow thanks for the advice everyone...
