I'm doing a wheels up rebuild of my 12scg and looking for some advice on the engine rebuild. I'm mostly taking the engine down to get the case, heads, etc power coated. but while I'm in there might as well pony it up a bit. I have a Buell race exhaust and open air box set up. Think of doing the 1250 cylinder and piston, heads port/polished...what else??
cams?? Looking for a nice streetable engine, pump gas.

What year is it?

What is your budget?

IF it's pre-2008, consider the 2008 flywheel/crank/C-rods. Really beefs it up.

You ought to consider new pistons and having the whole thing lightened/balanced.

(Dollars starting to pile up a bit)

Lighter pistons, lightening and balancing gives you a bit better throttle response - not more power, just quicker throttle.

John Dahmer (Dark Horse Crankworks/Hoban Brothers) built the motors that Paul James (James Gang) ran last year and again this season. They know their stuff. I paid full price for the lightening/balancing and case machining for the bigger bottom end - NO REGRETS.

Its an 05 and I don't have a big budget maybe 2Gs or so

You might still be able to get the stock flywheels/rods/pistons and have the cases cut to accept the bearings. Call Dahmer/Darkhorse and get an estimate. Might be do-able if you're keeping things stock.

I think what I described is closer to $4k

Hard to argue with the old saying: "there's no substitute for cubic inches" (when you're trying for more power without sacrificing reliability)

XB9 pistons. Read the Red White and Buell race bike article #4 from Track Day Mag. A 100hp at the rear wheel without new cams or anything else major. The kit with rings, gaskets, etc. only costs $455 from Wiseco. If someone was tearing an engine apart and wanted to keep things simple I don't know why they wouldn't do it; it's cheaper than most aftermarket exhaust pipes.

Eldredma ....what I don't like about that "Red White and Buell race bike article" is the compression ratio, its up around 12/1. Hard to run pump gas and your engine runs a lot hotter.

Others have claimed they have no problem with 93 octane. Besides, you're in MN and have a right side scoop why are you worried about overheating?

No I ain't freakin out.I was just curious.You must have more money than me because I dread the day I will need to.After buying my bike I have heard countless times H/D motors need rebuilding by 25,000 miles.I've never rode my bike hard and I will be very disappointed if I don't see a lot more miles out of my motor.If my motor doesn't last, this will be my first and last H/D product.I'm up to 20,000 so I guess time will tell.Thanks for the reply.

Hah 25k miles. One of the guys I ride with has 250k+ on his Buell S2, and my dad had 60k on his 2007 Screaming Eagle Electraglide when he traded it in on a new 09 a few months ago. My 06 Lightning is at 41k miles, down for the count right now till I fix the damage from a wreck.

Froggy so you're saying you have 41k miles on yours without a motor rebuild is that correct?Thats great!!! That is the kinda stuff I like to hear.
