FYI --

it took three years before i noticed this, and i've done nearly all of the work on my bike including changing forks, and tires -- the front brake rotor floats in between the rim and the heads of the bolts. sort of spring loaded, in a way. push rotor in toward the rim, and it gives, and returns to starting position when released. surprising to me.

thought it was a loose bolt, until i got hold of a torx wrench from some helpful cruiser guys, and loosened / retightened -- no change. was planning to ride home cautiously, but found other buddies with xbs were there, and, whaddyaknow, their's float, too. cannot figure out how i missed this 'til now.

HELP --

still need to find pulsating noise that caused me to noodle with rotor to begin with -- sort of a scrubbing type sound, rhythmic, speeds up on acceleration, slows down on deceleration, and stops when bike stops. not connected to engine revs, but sounds a little like intake noise. seems to have to be rotational, but, nothing immediately apparent.

If it's the same noise that I hear my Uly front brake making, then I've concluded that it's just the noise of the brake, some kind of very minor resonance. It caught my attention too. Kinda cool actually. I don't hear it with earplugs in.

no, not really.

it most likely is deposits on the rotor from the pads, clean the rotor down and the sound should go away, also can the stock pads and go with something better.


these rotors do make a whirring sound due to the holes in the rotor, that is normal, but a pulsating rubbing sound is not normal.

Just a thought: If the brake caliper has not been cleaned in a while, the pistons may be a little sticky, and causing a bit more rub on the brake disk than before. That could cause the whirring sound Ustorque talks about. Hope this helps, Dave

My front brake makes a nice little scrubbing sound ever since I installed the EBC brake pads : ). Also, haven't had a pulsing front rotor since : D.

ok, so after systematically changing both rotors & front pads, wheels (& bearings), rear sprocket, and idler pulley, scrubbing sound is still there. best i can figure is it's coming from the somewhere around the front pulley. again: rhythmic, pulsating, frequency speeds up on acceleration, slows on deceleration.

considered bent swing arm bolt, but sound would be expected to be constant, not pulsing, and not dependent on speed...i'd think.

when i coast the bike downhill, without engine running, the sound is there. when i turn the rear wheel by hand i hear a mild, intermittent crunching that seems to come from near the front pulley. cannot (yet) see anything that is rubbing, but, i'll look again in the morning.

when front pulley is spun by hand without the belt the gear movement inside the primary is audible. (yes, there is gear oil in the primary.) i don't know if this is normal or not. i'd think that some sound would be normally present with movement.

my previous belt shows no unusual wear, and the current belt (both '03) shows no unusual wear. it's seated very nicely in the pulleys, as far as i can tell.

the pulley is original, from '03, and when i turned it seemed to be secure...

STUMPED.
