I had to rotate my engine and drop the tail to replace the dang fan on my new-to-me 2006 XB12X/R/Ss mutant. I thought I would be cute and wrap the headers at the same time but ended up breaking an exhaust stud on the front cylinder taking the headers off. Nut was frozen with rust and I didn't realize I was so strong I guess... that's what I told the wifey anyway. I should have been patient and used PB Blaster first when I saw the rust, but the weather's nice and how often does that happen up in the PNW?
Does anyone have a Jims Tool they're willing to loan out to a brother in need? I'll buy one if need be, but I'm hoping there's a sympathetic sould out there. It's sheared too close to the head to double nut or use vice grips.
By the way, can I say that this forum is friggin awesome?! A little research answers all my questions, every time!

i bought one for the blast after asking on here for a week or so with no response,
but it shook out the stud piece before it arrived in the mail.
so i never had a chance to use it myself.

provide an $85 deposit (refunded upon return)
you pay shipping and
if you break it, don't bother to send it back
is that agreeable?

Well, disregard. I just bought one online - found a deal I couldn't refuse. Got one from George's Garage for $69 including shipping. Hopefully I won't need it again after this time, but I have peace of mind now. Should have it in 2-3 days, I'm pretty excited to git 'er done

How does that tool work? Fortunately I have never had to use one. I always use penetrating oil and heat when working a rusty bolt.

I used the george's garage tool on mine. Works great and is priced much more reasonably. Picked it up from the man himself.

Roysbuell: I will never again try w/out PB Blaster first. I'm an idiot.

So, I'm waiting for the tool to show up in the mail and it says you should use a tap to clean up the threads afterward. I thought I'd just swing by my local experts, Tacoma Screw... no joy. The taps they had were for finer threads than head side of the stud.
For those that have used the Jim's Tool setup before, where'd you get the right tap?

I picked up a Tap at Lowes. It's a pretty common thread... I just can't remember it right now. 5/16-something.

18 TPI. the stud has 2 different threads. fine on the outside (24), and coarse in the jug.

but don't let that stop you from putting in a good piece of thread-all. i was not about to wait a week and pay for shipping when the hardware store is just down the street. although i'm sure you will be waaay more satisfied with the right stuff holding your bike together.

Got the tap at Lowes - gracias.
Figured I'd replace all my studs at the same time. Took out the others tonight, kind of. Rear cylinder studs came out easy, but I broke the other one in the front cylinder, what the f! PB Blaster (day 2), torch, double nut and snap! Now that is some rust/corrosion! No luck here.
Whatever. Still waiting on my tool in the mail to drill out the rest of them. If that doesn't work, I'll use the thermite grenade.
I guess the good part is that I get new fun tools to play with.
